Hi all,

I'm thinking of putting an Audix D4 on a bass cabinet. Anyone tried this? Impressions? Comparisons to an M88 or RE20? Also kind of thinking about it on the Kick.

Thanks!

While it works fine on kick, the D4 is not as big-sounding on kick as a D6, and less clicky.
Similar for bass, you'll get good bottom end (more than an M88 or RE20) but all three of these are smooth on the top end, while more HF than a Beta52.

Hope this helps.

I’ve used the D4 almost exclusively on kick drum, but also for horns, and once or twice on a cello when I run out of other mics.  The trick to using it on a kick drum is to leave it an inch or two in front of the hole on the front head (if it has one) and not shove it inside.  I can’t see why the same philosophy wouldn’t work on a bass cabinet.

Very helpful- thanks! I don't need these to be SLAM IN YOUR FACE sounds- need them to be round but still punchy and articulate. I've never really liked the sound of the Beta52 or D112. I prefer a little more "air" to use a vague term...

One of my favorite kick drum sounds was the Heil PR30, but I don't think the rental shops carry them, and I'm on a budget. If the D4 will give me what I need, and not be as cumbersome as an RE20, I think it just may work out. Still TBD if we'll go direct with the bass or not.

Thanks again!

The D4 is a darned good all around mic.  Good for toms, horns, amps, kick (EQ to taste, no built in mid scoop like dedicated kick mics).  My favorite kick mic is the PR40 (again, no mid scoop - I like to do it myself).
