….but it was not easy.
As opposed to the first game this one was a pitcher’s duel between Newhouser and Chesboro.
The Tigers took the early lead behind the bat of Al Kaline. A HR in the second and a double in the 4th game them a 2=0 lead that held up till the seventh. Lazzeri and DiMaggio had RBI doubles to tie the game at 2.
A SF from Greenberg off Ruffing in the eighth gave the Tigers a slim 3-2, which they took into the ninth. In the top of the ninth they threatened. They had men at first and third with one out. Ron Guidry was brought in to face Ty Cobb and Donie Bush (Bush ran for Heilmann in the 8th). But Guidry got Cobb on a shallow fly and Bush on a pop put to end the threat.
John Hiller was brought in to close it out. Tony Lazzeri greeted him with a game tying HR (6-9, 3). Dickey then PH for the pitcher and walked. After DiMaggio struck out for the first out, Mantle singled and Ruth walked to load the bases. Gehrig sent the ball deep into the RF seats for a game winning Grand Slam HR and the Yankees won 7-3 (3-4).
