In a see saw battle that ended with the go ahead run at plate with Al Kaline facing Mariano Rivera, the Yankees held on for an 8-7 win.
The Yankees jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a 2 run first inning single from Lou Gehrig.
But the Tigers held tough, scoring one in the third and one in the fourth to tie it. When the Yankees scored once to take the lead in their half of the fourth the Tigers came back with three in the fifth on a Gehringer RBI single and a Greenberg HR.
The Yankees tied it in their half of the fifth on a Berra HR and a Gehrig RBI double, tying the score at 5.
The two starts, Bunning and Gomez left after 5, and the game was turned over to the bullpens. Hiller for Detroit and Shawkey settled things down till the 8th when the Yankees scored three to take the lead.
A solo HR by Ruth and a 2 run HR by ARod gave the Yankees an 8-5 lead and with Gossage and Rivera in the pen Yankee fans were feeling confident.
But in the ninth the Tigers made it close. Heilmann doubled in Cash to make it 8-6 and Rivera replaced Gossage. Gehringer grounded out for the second out. But Greenberg singled in Heilmann to make it 8-7. But Rivera retired Kaline on a ground out and Yankees could breath a sigh of relief.
