In an exhausting game the Yankees defeated the Pirates 9-8 in 11 innings to take a 2-0 lead.
The Pirates jumped out to an early 7-0 lead by the fourth inning. The runs were scored off Lefty Gomez and Spud Chandler.
In the first Waner had a solo HR and Stargell a 2 run HR.
In the second Waner had a 2 run double.
In the fourth Wagner had a 2 run single.
The Yankees came back with six in the fifth off Cooper.
Dimaggio had a 3 run HR, Gehrig a run HR and Jeter an RBI single.
The Yankees tied it in the 7th on a Lazzeri RBI single and took the lead in the eighth on a Ruth RBI single.
The Pirates came back to tie it in the ninth on a Mazeroski bases loaded walk off Rivera,
In the 11th Berra homered off French to win the game.
Shawkey was the winner, French the loser.
