Howdy

If this works, we can use it.

If not, it's back to the official App Inventor forums.

I'm good with just Tony
and we can probably get BDA in

so

I am going to step back from the keyboard and think
if anyone else wants to jump in and say something about design, go for it

The app is the "We +1 App Inventor"

I do not know if that name causes problems with an app in the market, but

This is an app by and for folks that
  heart/ friend/ whatever App Inventor

the Google version of that is +1

and we will show how much folks like App Inventor when we have 100k installs

and the page in the market has way more +1 that the installs (not everyone can install it)

and we can put a +1 on the the apps web page

OK?

to tAIR - the App Inventor Repository
Not to be a killjoy, but how is this different from people visiting
tAIR?

Guest Book and Testimonials? I've seen this kind of thing before - it
gets a lot of initial support but then fizzles out. Or the notes on
the guest book get so verbose and spammed out that it needs to be cut
off.

Game? This isn't a game. People are learning skills and writing
software. For some this is a business and AI is just the tool of
choice.

Twitter? There's already a Twitter client. For a Twitter account,
rather than a new "@WePlus1AI" or something, I think tAIR itself is a
better focus. @TAIR is taken, @tAIRNews or similar would have the
exact same results and improve on the tAIR brand, helping it to
centralize as a community resource.

Help and Info? What information will be here that's not at tAIR?

I dunno if I'm in the minority or not but I believe there are places
where apps fit - and not. In this case I don't see compelling reason
for an app. But the tAIR site is already in place, a community
fixure, and it just needs a few new pages to support what's being
proposed.

Now, what could be done is to get asUtil into shape and get all AI
users to start using it. Encourage people to use it they really like
AI. They can invoke a function in asUtil that will ping a database
with the appname, date, time, and a 0/1 to indicate if whether this is
the first time the app has been used from a new install. This will
allow the community to see a running total of apps in use as well as
how often they're used. (A mechanism needs to be in place to keep
this from being abused.)

All in all, I think a new initiative like this is also sort of
stacking the deck. tAIR represents the interests of the group of
people present here. If this group creates a new community hub, it's
not showing any more support for AI or Google, it's just the same guys
voting twice. I think this would be better initiated from students or
some other group, while this group focuses on the resources at the
repository already in place. If others don't create their own fan
pages then that's just where AI fits in the world.

Finally, I'm not so sure I'd want to give a nod to Google anymore.
They've already given AI the -1 and this initiative is going to honor
them in perpetuity with a +1? No, with sincere respect and
appreciation for the individuals who have keep AI going, it looks like
MIT and perhaps others are going to carry the ball in the very near
future, and I think the +1 symbolism is a commendable homage but just
for the short-term.

Woo Hoo, TonyG is stepping up to come up with a design for an app that shows Google and the world how great both App Inventor and our community is :-)

and

I waited patiently for someone to jump in. I can do what we need to do on tair
or continue to wait patiently :-)

Now for everyone else but TonyG and me

I have a total of hmmm nought nought carry the nought

zero App Inventor apps in the market.

I do have a few SDK apps, and TonyG and I are working on them.
(ask what I am doing, hint it has HTML5 in it)

My 'agenda' was to wait to see who was interested in what

the answer is, Brenda is doing some cat herding and doing a good job
Massimilano is actually working on a twitter thing
nobody has sent testimonials
I will bring the community (kicking and screaming if necessary) into getting a cool example where folks record a location and it is displayed on a map (guestbook for those that did not see my secret plan :-P)

and
well my wife told me it is time to go

Good input TonyG, as always

anyone else?

How about using the tAIR advanced multi screen template as a base and a third of the asp is already done?

Hi, l'm not a federal member as I don't have enough time neither good English to discuss with you, but I do approchait and keep on reading you guys' wonderful dissension.

I vote for Tony G. As for the app, my little thought: across the web we have quite many tutos, docs and communitys about AI. Not enough but quite many. And science AI is a tool to make android apps, why not simply make an app that demonstrate ALL functions that AI can make. This will allow users, without too much explanation, to know how awesome AI is.

We have indeed many demo apps but I think a "complete" demo app doesn't exist yet, and if it does, it will be amazing and attractive to either newbies or old users.

This is just a rough idea, I don't know if it is doable (ALL the functions in one app!), and if it is, how to show functions by a way clear, simple but not boring; besides, same blocks can make so many different functions...

Just talking.

Best regards,

C. Y. PAN

Howdy (good Texan for hello) C.Y.

I am starting to see that there could be several apps.

Perhaps we can work with Leshell's kids, they can mentor us :-)

and back to TonyG and his most excellent comments

yeah, how is this different than the tair companion app?

Guest Book and Testimonials? I've seen this kind of thing before - it
gets a lot of initial support but then fizzles out.  Or the notes on
the guest book get so verbose and spammed out that it needs to be cut
off.

Testimonials
I was thinking some of us write a testimonial, Brenda's team collects and puts some where the app can reference them.

There are folks wanting an app that references docs, this can be a solution for those kinds of apps
or we can do something else

I was not planning on ongoing testimonials

Guest Book
I want to show where folks are on a map. People enter their location and we display on a map.
We can edit the spammers if necessary.

A reason is we can show some of the cool stuff App Inventor does.

Game?  This isn't a game.  People are learning skills and writing
software.  For some this is a business and AI is just the tool of
choice.

Game was suggested.
I think including something IF it does not bloat the app is not a bad idea. More demo of why we love App Inventor.

What do you think Massimilano is building?

Help and Info?  What information will be here that's not at tAIR?

apps should have help. I am fond of 'if it was hard to write, it should be hard to use' but that has not worked well for me in the past

info
things like giving us that worked on it credit for our hard work and licensing info (CC etc)

I dunno if I'm in the minority or not but I believe there are places
where apps fit - and not.  In this case I don't see compelling reason
for an app.  But the tAIR site is already in place, a community

the suggestion started as a petition to Google and
...
we are building this app to show Google and the world
  that we +1 App Inventor
  :-)

fixure, and it just needs a few new pages to support what's being
proposed.

Yep, A good reason to do some of the work on tair.

Now, what could be done is to get asUtil into shape and get all AI

how often they're used.  (A mechanism needs to be in place to keep
this from being abused.)

I stepped away, got coffee (perhaps should have got warm milk), ate a snack,
walked around
and still what to say what I really think

You and I will make asUtil do awesome things.
a few people will get it
...

All in all, I think a new initiative like this is also sort of
stacking the deck.  tAIR represents the interests of the group of
people present here.  If this group creates a new community hub, it's
not showing any more support for AI or Google, it's just the same guys

some other group, while this group focuses on the resources at the
repository already in place.  If others don't create their own fan
pages then that's just where AI fits in the world.

tAIR is a repository
all are welcome

App Inventor will be open source
If the app helps tAIR grow, great

most people are not here. they use tAIR. they are not 'here'

Interesting

The app is a +1 for App Inventor
Google deserves the credit it deserves
the community deserves the credit it deserves
MIT and the others that added things like Kawa and OpenBlocks and block programming deserve the credit they get

the app is a +1 for App Inventor, all it is was and can be.

Hi Folks,

It looks like the We <3 App Inventor App group has completely dissipated.  I've been swamped with work pouring in these past couple of weeks, and I've been struggling with wireless on the blink, but it looks like I've got things under control today, so I'm catching up with emails, and looking into getting our fabulous group back in business.  For now, I'd like to get a head count on who's still with me on this, and what contributions are in the pipelines.  Gary and I had done a couple of little tests on packaging the contacts from the circle, but I'm still not completely sure as to how we can work with that, other than each person having a list of contacts that should be in the group, but I'm going to just list them here, as I did before, and we can all make sure we're up to date on who's in our circle of App Inventor Lovers.

So far, I've got...

Roger Belk
Anthony Barnes
Ralph Roberts
Chieh Cheng
Massimilia
Colton Harris
Salvatore Pirrera
Thomas Arroyo
Thanos Ts
Leshell Hatley Youth APPLab
George FatPitch
Jason Tyler
Colin Lacey
Nico Janssen
Gary Frederick
John Deisher
Waleed Mohamed
Lennart Jonsson
Steven Wiggy Picken
Sebastjan Valand
M. Hossein Amerkashi
Malcolm Silberman
Abhinav Agrawal
Mike McDermott
Jane Greiner
Taifun Bar
Myra Deister
Michael Powers, Jr.

28 friends in total.

Temporarily, I'll keep posting in the coffee shop, that is until we have all of our folks together in this other group, and we can go ahead and move forward with this project.  Give me a heads up if you're still interested.

Thanks,

Brenda
