I would say yes if you consider that the variable name has to be parsed letter by letter and compared to another text value, then the data retrieved. A native variable has much less overhead to do this I am sure. If in some future update variables could be encapsulated in a folder or could be grouped inside an object with a spinner to open it and view them, that would accomplish the same thing and be more efficient (and tidy!)
