David Dear XL,s,          I grew up next door to Mike and enjoyed listening and watching your group evolve from the beginning.  In 1962, I was 11 and in the 6th grade. Between starting drums and buying my first vinyl 33 LP in '62 and up to watching fire and Ice play opener for Blood sweat and tears at the masonic temple in 69(?).  I was listening and watching your band as an example of what versatility, talent and enthusiasm was about in the age of garage bands and the dawning of the revolution that the British invasion brought to my generation (talking about).  At 58, it's hard to sequence some of the history correctly.  I started on pianio in 2nd grade and english horn and drums in 6th. The night  i broke my arm  and Marion H. helped me as louis took me in an ambulance to the hospital, I was supposed to be playing in the town band by the Star drug store.  Remember those Saturday nights!  Anyway, I bought my 2nd drum set from Les, Gretsch, blue, small 4 pc.,  he said, "they
weren't loud enough."  I immediately put a red and blue light bulb in the bass drum and painted  "the Psychedelic Sound Machine" on the front.  We modeled ourselves after the XL's, as you were rock gods to us(Raie Nicolaus, Kent Kistenmacher, Gus Nopolous, and later in the Laconia Reunion, Philly Oveson and Steve Jaehle and myself David Smith, all class of 69).   John Fliss (local peer and guitar player) helped us learn Hang on Sloopy, and I think Joe M. with demonstration by Les,  explained that the beat of Sunshine of Your Love was not 2 and 4 but 1 and 3?  I remember other stories, but enough for now.  Congratulations on your long deserved nomination and entry into the hall of fame.  I am still playing keyboards and I am glad you are going to continue some live dates.  I figure at this point in life,  Music is the only thing that matters, everything else has come and gone. but no one can take your talent.   long live rock. !         Peace,  David Smith, Wilton Jct., Iowa.
