Interest Survey: Middle School Student Interest Survey

http://deptford.schoolfusion.us/modules/groups/homepagefiles/cms/969291/File/Include%20Toolkit%20Files/student_survey%5B1%5D.pdf?sessionid=25b433324d42f372c2459bcdfb20ab58?

The first page of this survey offers specific personal questions regarding friends and family.  It does not have contact information, which may come in handy (although most of that is already stored electronically).  The next page asks for student interests  as well as an opportunity to brag about themselves.  I like the last page in that it allows the student to set/explain their future goals.  Knowing this gives teachers the opportunity to work with students on obtaining that goal.

Multiple Intelligence: MS/HS What’s Your Learning Style Survey?

http://www.edutopia.org/multiple-intelligences-learning-styles-quiz

The first page of the survey asks questions regarding students’ interests outside of school to gain an idea of what they enjoy most, as well as what type of learner they are.  The second page pertains to the likeliness of wanting/doing an activity.  These questions relate to the scientific mind, nature, or musically inclined.  Page three asks about group work and rather you are the leader, speaker, scribe, or the goof ball.  This gives the teacher an idea of whether or not the student is a passive learner or one who likes to sit back.  The last page has a series of statements that are to be rates as to how much they relate to you.  Upon completion, a bar chart is displayed showing your percentage of multiple intelligences.

Learning Styles Survey: HS What’s Your Learning Style?

http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-styles.shtml

This survey is a series of 20 questions to decide your VKA learning style.  What I like about this survey is that the questions relate to students’ everyday lives and does not ask questions solely on school work.  Personally when I took it, I felt like I had multiple answers to the same question.  I wish that there was a fourth option.  At the end of the survey, you are told what type of learning works best for you.

Learner Profile Inventory: Elementary: Mr. Hendrick’s Learning Profile Inventory

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NGTVRBN

This survey was created by a teacher and asks deeper questions about aspects that may affect students learning (disabilities, language, and religion).  It goes on to ask the students to rate questions based on what they are able to do at school and what they need the most help in.  It also asks for the student to write three goals for the school year.

Collect and Analyze Data: Google Forms

http://support.google.com/drive/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=87809

To compile the data, I would create a Google Form allowing me to create my own questions, make multiple choice, and short answers responses.  It also allows me to save the data in one spreadsheet that is easy to access.  It can be taken anonymously or you can make it required that your students write their names so you can actually use their strengths and weaknesses to become an improved teacher.

Welcome Kyle,
I am glad you made it.  I was beginning to worry that I had done something wrong with the group site.  Technology is great, but it can be so confusing sometimes.
The wonderful thing about surveys is we have the power to make them our own.  We can tailor them to fit our classes.  I used to only consider using surveys and inventories at the beginning of the school year, but perhaps I could gain more from some of these during the middle of the year.  At the start of a school year, students are often shy and may not feel comfortable answering some of the survey questions or perhaps they provide answers that only tell part of the story.  During the middle of the year, students are more comfortable with the teacher and will likely share more information or give more honest feedback.
This might make an excellent study or teacher inquiry.
I appreciate the sources you provide here.  I will add them to my collection.
Chad

Chad,

That's a very interesting point that I never thought of.  It does take some time for our students to open up about themselves, especially if they have never met us before.  Personally, I would be less willing to give personal information about myself to a person I never met.  I always give my students a form to rate me as a teacher as well as their own growth at the end of they year.  It seems like giving one at the middle of the year would only benefit us.

Not sure if any of this is working correctly--except Survey Monkey actually.  My survey is there.  It was the only site I could find that I could get on and make work for this kind of thing.  It only allows 10 questions on the free version and I would want more, but I did consider it might make sense to do more than one and break them down into 10-question surveys based on clustering related questions together.  Anyone find a site they really liked for creating surveys?

Here is my link if it didn't work otherwise...

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QYYXPSS

Good luck, everyone!!!

I tried using Survey Monkey as well.  I was not impressed.  It kept asking me to download spyware that I already have on my computer.  No thanks.  I watched a tutorial on YouTube that explained how to do a survey using Google Docs.  It is VERY easy to create and send to anyone.  Here is the link to the YouTube video.
I hope this helps you in the future.

Hello all,
This week we are supposed to conduct an online conference/chat about the resources we have located concerning our UDL presentations.  I have not used a chatroom in quite a long time and I have never used Skype before.  We need to decide when we plan to meet for our chat; I am not sure how that will be graded this week, but I assume we will post something to our learning community forum with our links to websites and other resources.

Personally, I take Monday and Tuesday (normally) to read through the resources and take notes.  I try to make my initial post on Tuesday and follow up during the week.  As for the application assignment, I usually do not begin working on that until Wednesday.

I was thinking that Thursday evening would be a good time to initiate our chat if that was suitable for everyone else.  This would give us all time to complete some research and still have time for our other obligations.  We also need to decide what method we will use to conduct our chat; I am open to what the majority prefers, but I will have to sign up.

Please think about it and get back to the group,

Rachel Smith

Hello Rachel...everyone,

Thursdays will work for me.  I am available to chat between 730-9 pm EST.  If there is a chatroom attached to this learning community, maybe we can use it for our projects.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you.

Hello,

Any evening should work fine for me.  I tried looking for a chat room in Google Groups, but could not find one. One option would be to use this discussion feature, but that can get convoluted.  The other thing we can do is use Google +, which has a chat feature and allows multiple people to join in on the conversation, but that would require everyone to sign up (I am not sure if it is linked to Google Groups).

Group,
There is a chatroom option in Walden Blackboard that we can use.  Dr. Wolsey mentioned it in thenotes.  That might be the easiest option for us.

Good evening all,
I appreciate you all getting back about your availability.  Since we do not have to turn in an application this week, does anyone know when we are required to complete the chatroom criteria?  Chad is unable to meet until 9:15 on Thursday; that is a bit late for me, but I can work it out if everyone else is on board for that time.  Friday or Saturday would also work well for me, but we do need to decide on a time.  Does anyone know how we will be graded on the chat? Are we supposed to invite Dr. Wolsey to join us?

Thanks all! I look forward to discussing with you soon.

Hi All,

Sorry I'm late for chiming in, I work late some nights and didn't get the message until this morning.  I can make Thursday, although it sounds like a very late night for me as I'm on EST.  I could do Wednesday evening as well, but I work late on Friday so that isn't an option for me.  From what I can tell we need to email Dr. Wolsey a transcript of the chat, and he'll grade it from there.  Looking forward to the discussion!

Dear Awesome Group,

Kyle mentioned the Google+ chat feature.  I am not familiar with this, but it sounds like a great chat tool.  Group, I will do my best to meet at whatever time you all decide.  I teach Bible study on Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30 (including driving time), community play practice on Thursday evening (6:30- 9:00) after wrestling practice (3:45-6:15).  Friday evening and all day Saturday are open for me.  I hate the thought of giving up an hour or two on my Saturday, but I would do that for all of you. :)  I will live with whatever you decide.
Okay, on three - ONE, TWO, THREE  - GO TEAM!!!

Hello,

Sorry to contradict myself, but it may be difficult getting a transcript of our discussion through Google + (its more like an IM interface and may not copy and paste easily into a word document).  I think sticking to Walden's Lecture Hall may be the best option since everyone already has user accounts.  Also, Saturday works fine with me.

Hi Group,
I coach wrestling and will not be home until after 6:30 CST.  The only evenings I will be available this week will be Friday and Saturday, unless our meeting is later.  Here are some possibilities for me.  Thursday - 9:15 p.m. CST - Friday - 6:30 to whenever - Saturday - Anytime.

Hello Rachel...everyone,

Thursdays will work for me.  I am available to chat between 730-9 pm EST.  If there is a chatroom attached to this learning community, maybe we can use it for our projects.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you.

Hello all,
This week we are supposed to conduct an online conference/chat about the resources we have located concerning our UDL presentations.

Good evening group,
It looks like Saturday morning is going to suit more of us than Thursday night.  I would like to meet at 11:00 EST; if that is not ideal for any of you, please let me know.  Also, I think Kyle and Chad both chimed in that using Walden's Lecture Hall for our discussion will be easier than using another messenger site.

Maria, this is also new territory for me.  I have not used a chatroom since I was in high school and had Yahoo! Instant Messenger. I do think this will be a great opportunity for us to all pitch in our ideas about the multimedia presentation requirement for this course.  I have slowly begun to work on it and I do have questions and a few suggestions.  I have never used the Walden Lecture Hall, so for those of us not familiar with it, we each need to sign on and be sure we know what we are doing. At least this will give us a few more days to prep for our discussion.

I appreciate everyone working together.

Rachel

Hey GROUP,
I found the coolest tool we can use for chatting.  It is called TitanPad.  We can all chat at the same time and when we are finished, the script can be easily saved or printed.  I took the liberty of creating a chatroom for us; however, we DO NOT need to use this method.  I sent all of you an invitation.  Let me know if you didn't get it.  Otherwise go to the site and put in this code: m0pUmjnCFT

Yes, Saturday can work for me as well.  I can be online by 11:30 a.m (EST).  I tutor in the morning and the earliest I can chat with you guys is at this time.

Good morning group,
Chad set up the TitanPad and I believe this tool will work great for us.  It is very simple to use and we can easily save and send our script to Dr. Wolsey.  To make sure all have time to sign in and get ready for the discussion, please plan to meet at 11:30 EST on Saturday in the TitanPad chatroom. If this time does not work for anyone, please let us know. Again, I look forward to talking with all of you.  Also, if you have not checked out the TitanPad site, please do that before Saturday.  It is a great tool.

I keep reviewing e-mails here and I can't find any invitation to TitanPad.  If I go to the site, I don't see where to put in the code.
I don't understand how to get linked to everyone else....

Help!?

Hey Group,
Copy and paste the following link into your browser and it should take you directly to the titanpad chatroom.

Sorry to be a little dense, but this link takes me to the main site, but not to the chatroom itself, does it need to be set up before we can enter?  I'm not familiar with TItanpad at all.
