Dear all,

It's with a lot of sadness that I inform you that one of our members, Akua Akyaa Nkrumah, passed away last week.

Akyaa was quite honestly the most passionate person about waste management and recycling that I'd ever met. Akyaa, self-proclaimed "borla woman," was the Innovations Manager at Jekora Ventures, where she worked to help the company find new solutions and ways to use waste. She started an initiative, Green Ghanaian, as a center for environmental education, research and dialogue. She was one of those people who not only amassed amazing experience, but shared what she learned openly and with enthusiasm. She was always thinking GREEN. She once helped me organize a community cleanup in Jamestown, and then two years later, she organized an amazing recycling initiative at the Chale Wote Street Art Festival, also in Jamestown. She liked to take selfies with the Jekora Ventures waste collection truck.

Akua was an amazing person - passionate, honest, funny, kind, ready to get down to business, sassy, but first and foremost she cared about Ghana and its future.  She was always willing to inspire others by sharing her ideas, and to build coalitions (especially of young people) to think about how we can work together to ensure a greener future for Ghana.

She was too young and too full of light to go so soon. A friend has written a touching memorial to remember Akyaa: http://kajsaha.com/2017/06/green-ghanaian-akua-akyaa-nkrumah-is-gone/ and here is a recent short video where Akua talks about her passions: https://www.facebook.com/JOATGHANA/videos/1584660155179671/

We mourn Akyaa's passing, but we are thankful for the many lives she touched. She was a wonderful person, and she will be sorely missed.

Please keep Akyaa's family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. You can also contribute to help Akyaa's family give her a proper send-off: https://www.gofundme.com/akuaakyaa

Thank you

Could some event or activity be done in recognition of her life and work?

Dr Sarfoh, I guess you are on point. An emergency meeting of members in Accra (in the very least) or getting a delegation to visit the family will not be a bad idea. All things being equal, I will be presenting a paper on the state of waste management in Ghana and the way forward at Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences  on June 27, and I will ask for a minute silence in memory of Akua. Thanks all, this is great. Here is something I'd like to do:

I'd like to put together a podcast in Akyaa's memory. A couple of years
ago, our platform collaborated to put together a piece on the Accra
floods, identifying clear challenges and potential solutions. Akua also
wrote this piece just a year ago
http://ghanadecides.com/2016/06/accra-floods-a-symptom-of-our-national-low-self-esteem/.

Also, about a year ago, I got together a couple of Urban Platform
members to record a podcast - we had a recorded conversation on
Agbogbloshie and Old Fadama and the misconceptions and complexities of
informality (http://africanurbanism.net/conversations-agbogbloshie/).

With the continued flooding, I'd like to again bring together a
handful of folks for another podcast, this one focused on the city's
continued flooding issues and environmental management. It can be done
to educate, but also in memory of Akyaa. I have gotten some names of
folks who might be interested. If you are interested in participating,
write to me and I'll coordinate the day/time for us to get
together. Unfortunately my timing is tight and we'd need to do it
between June 23-27. Will of course share the podcast recording with
you all.

Best,
Victoria

A couple of friends suggested a cleaning of the Chemu Lagoon in her memory...

She saw the lagoon/estuary cleaning exercises as papering over the rot. I agree with her since one small rainfall bringing all the debris back. She however joined in several of the beach clean ups and ensured Jekora vehicles picked the trash for recycling.
