Dozens of soldiers have died after the Taliban shot down a Nato helicopter - in the deadliest single attack on foreign troops since the Afghanistan war began in 2001.
Earlier reports said more than 20 Navy Seals from the unit that killed Osama bin Laden were among those killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
The operators from Seal Team Six were being flown by a crew of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, US officials officials.
One source says the team was thought to include 22 Seals, three Air Force air controllers, seven Afghan Army troops, a dog and his handler, and a civilian interpreter, plus the helicopter crew.
Afghan officials at president Hamid Karzai 's office said 31 US special forces and seven local soldiers died in the attack on the Chinook.
A senior US official has confirmed the helicopter was apparently shot down by insurgents.
Eyewitnesses said the Chinook was struck during a firefight and the Taliban claimed responsibility for the incident.
It took place during an anti-Taliban operation in an insurgent-infested district of the eastern province of Wardak, just southwest of the Afghan capital Kabul.
The Afghan statement said: "The president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai expressed condolences over a Nato helicopter crash and the deaths of 31 members of US special forces."
It added that seven Afghans were also killed in the crash, who the country's defence ministry said were also members of the special forces.
The strike was by far the worst to hit foreign troops in the near decade-long war. The previous worst saw 16 American soldiers killed in 2005 when a Taliban rocket hit their Chinook in the eastern province of Kunar.
Mohammad Saber said he saw the helicopter plummet to the ground during an operation in his village.
He said: "We were at home. We saw one of the helicopters land on the roof of a house of a Taliban commander, then shooting started.
"The helicopter later took off but soon after taking off it went down and crashed. There were other helicopters flying as well."
Wardak provincial spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said the crash came during a late-night operation against Taliban insurgents.
"We're not sure if this happened due to insurgent fire or not but there were some casualties of foreign troops due to the crash," he said.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said it was responsible for shooting down the helicopter and acknowledged that eight insurgents had been killed.

As expected Neoass missed the whole point. You are rejoicing that 362 Americans were killed this year but forget how many million muslims are slaughtered during the same period in Iraq, Egypt, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Pakistan etc. Either your arithmetic (also) seems to be very poor or you are pervert and think lives of 362 westerners were far more precious than millions of muslims slaughtered and hence it is a bigger blow to the west than to muslims.
And the import point again, it is not what Talibans achieved by inflicting a few hundred deaths or trillion dollar loss to American economy but what they did for the muslims and Afghan people that is important. Is there even a single story of some thing constructive they did for muslims like providing schools, jobs, clean water to the people or taking care of Afghan widows and Iraqi widows who are surviving on begging and prostitution
due to economic hardship ? If they even think of these issues, it will be a big paradigm shift. But of course those who count on the help from non-existent allah will do nothing constructive. Because islam is nothing but pure evil for muslims first and then other humanity.

Neoass, Understand one thing that there is difference between riot and
revolution, between street mugging and war. These stray acts of taliban amount
to no more than street crimes. Though we may clap for such acts of retaliation
of taliban showing their soldierly spirit, don't harbour any illusions that they
will bring down any super power. Russia came down not because of taliban or
Afghanistan but because of flawed policies of Communism practised over decades
which had hollowed their economy and state. If the moth eaten branch of a
tree falls down when the crow sits on it, crow should not conclude that he is
very strong and because of his strength the branch fell down. If America goes
bankrupt, it will be because of their leaders who follow disastrous policies
over several decades and Taliban should not take any credit for it. If America
can lose war after losing a helicopter or a few dozen soldiers, it won't be a
super power in the
first place. So don't harbour any illusions. The real test and strength of
taliban will reflect if and when they rule over Afghanistan and turn it into
modern vibrant society and not in destroying any thing. Muslims measure their
strength in their ability to destroy some thing where as civilisation's success
is always measured on what the people can
build. Sooner you muslims realise it
the better for muslim societies.

U.S. troops killed in a Helicopter crash, by U.S./CIA/ISI trained Taliban
fighters using U.S. supplied rockets to shoot down the aircraft, utilising the

though intended to fight the terrorists. Pakistan is the origin of terrorist
acts all over the World and it is high time U.S. realises the fact, lest the

You may be right. Her disappearance from the capital may be for creating
sympathy wave in favour of her son due to her alleged serious sicknesss and not

There is something really fishy and suspicious about Mrs. Gandhi being in the
hospital in US. Would any US hospital admit any patient (no matter how powerful
VIP he/she is?) for surgery or any other treatment without entering his/her name
in the computer system? Please someone who works in the hospital, confirm this.
Without entering the patient's name in the computer how can you make a file,
tag, etc. This is absolutely unthinkable when now everything is computerized.
Also you cannot use any fake name either to "throw off the media". This is
illegal in this country.

New York:Indian Overseas Congress party workers and reporters staked out New
York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to find out what exactly ails
sprightly 64-year-old Sonia
Gandhi. The Gandhi family is dealing with her
surgery for an undisclosed medical condition with more secrecy than Israel’s
Mossad.
According to diplomatic sources, Sonia Gandhi’s old friend Pulok Chatterji, who
is now India’s executive director at the World Bank in Washington, quietly made
the super-efficient arrangements for her surgery.
The Indian embassy in Washington and Indian consulate in New York were kept in
the dark to avoid media leaks. Chatterji will soon be returning to India to join
the PM’s Office as Principal Secretary.

Chatterji and his aide at the executive director’s office, Rupes Dalal,
travelled to New York on Monday to smooth Gandhi’s admission to
Sloan-Kettering’s in-patient facility. Chatterji has informed his World Bank
bosses that he will be back in Washington on 10
August.
Once Gandhi recovers from her surgery, she may be moved into a large hotel-like
suite at the Weill Cornell Medical Center or the Columbia University Medical
Center at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital. These comfortable hospital suites
with stunning views of the Hudson River and Manhattan’s skyline are better
equipped to handle the crush of expected visitors.
Members of the Indian Overseas Congress trickled into the Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Center to get news about the Congress leader and glimpse her children Rahul and
Priyanka and son-in-law Robert Vadra. The wait has proved futile so far but the
vigil continues on Friday.
“I just couldn’t sit at home anymore,” said Manhattan restaurant owner Harshpal
Singh, who is a member of the Indian Overseas Congress. “I was getting too
depressed and wanted to be here to show support for Mrs Gandhi and her family.”
India’s
Gandhi family has pulled off something most powerful American political
dynasties can’t (or don’t) do. The Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre does not have
Sonia Gandhi’s name in the hospitalised patient data system. At this point she
is a ghost!

So far, Congress party spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi has only confirmed that
Gandhi had surgery abroad on Thursday evening and “the operation was
successful.” It is still unknown whether it is a cancer-related surgery although
Gandhi is said to be recovering in an ICU at Sloan-Kettering Centre, where the
primary focus is cancer. The physicians at Sloan Kettering treat more cancer
patients in a year
than most doctors’ treat in a lifetime.
Gandhi will remain in New York for up to three weeks, while Rahul, who has
accompanied his mother, returns to India to be the glue behind the four-member
committee looking after the affairs of the Congress.
Gandhi didn’t turn over the leadership of the Congress Party to anyone when she
was hospitalised in 2008 for breathing difficulties so her actions this time
round suggest she is undergoing major surgery. She has also created a buzz by
elevating her son and general secretary Rahul Gandhi as co-leader of India’s
oldest political party.
In Gandhi’s absence, Rahul, along with Sonia’s political secretaryAhmed Patel,
defence minister AK Antony and party veteran Janardhan Dwivedi, all of whom are
family loyalists, will be in charge of the Congress party. Analysts say the move
positions Rahul as the likely successor to Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh.
