Use the Basic Rules, which you can find here:  http://fate-srd.com/fate-core/character-creation

You’ll want to understand the difference between aspects skills, etc, as they will impact

Everyone gets one additional free aspect for their race and one free aspect for class (except for magic users).

Race

There are no racial modifiers, if you want a small, quick, half-orc, just pick your stats to do so.  If you want to be a vampire, though, we’d need to discuss it.  If you wanted to be a dragon, though with no dragon powers manifested, that would be fine, though if you wanted to have “powers”, we’d need to work that out.

Class:

Everyone has access to a class “skill”.  So, if you want to be a thief, you would take the ‘thief’ skill.  Be mindful, though, that these are generally the non-combat skills (magic excepted, see magic entry).   So, if you wanted to fight as a thief, you use the fight skill.  Backstab, though, would be the ‘thief’ skill, as would sneak, pick locks, etc.  Fighter skill would allow you to gain an advantage against opponents, but would not help your actual fighting ability directly.

Equipment:  You are free to have any equipment you like.  There is no weight limits, per se, but be reasonable.  As a general rule, there is no specific benefit to weapons and armor.  If you have a fight of +4, it’s +4 regardless of the weapon used   Same with shoot, it’s technically the same whether you use a bow, a dagger, or a pea shooter.  The quality of the equipment, and the appearance, will depend on the resources skill.  (Note, there is no “loot”, in the system.  What you would get, in additional to specific items, is either a temporary or permanent increase to resources.)

There ARE magical armor and weapons.  If you wanted something to start with, you can either do it as a stunt, or an aspect.  We'll want to discuss it.

Magic And Faith Systems will come in a separate post.

Can you give us a flavor of the world? Standard D&D type maybe? High/low fantasy, levels of magic, monsters roaming the world, distopian society ... that sort of stuff? Been watching Harry Potter movies this weekend so I'm all about Expelliarmus :-)

To the whole group this time.

Chuck,

Welcome to the group. There are a lot of posts on the fare system and character generation.

I know Greg is playing with a magic user type, if Chuck and Ed start narrowing in on a class let me know.

The initial scene is designed to explore the system, and also get the group together.

Don't worry too much about balance, as I fully expect you will have minions, and I will Tailor combat to the characters.

Drafts version of Nymh.

Feel free to throw rocks (or ideas)

Name: Nymh
Age: 29

Aspects: High Concept: Procurer of valuable mysteries in service to Shar, Trouble: Another member of his old gang is out to get him, (not so) Smooth criminal, Nose for treasure

Skills: Burglary (+4); Lore (+3); Stealth (+3); Fight (+2); Investigate (+2); Notice (+2); Athletics (+1); Contacts (+1); Deceive (+1); Shoot (+1)

Stunts: Always a Way Out, Face in the Crowd, I've Read About That!

===== Histories =====
Your Story: Nymh was a thief, resonably successful, and fell in with a bad crowd that would pretty much take what they wanted through force, if they could not through guile.  He was more of the guile end of the operation, good with his hands, and had a knack for knowing where to look.
Crossing Paths 1: As is the case with most partnerships in his line of work, eventually his crew had creative differences.  The rest of the gang, primarily the leader, Reece, began almost strip-mining the cities they would visit.  Nymh wanted to take it a little easier, allowing the city to recoup its losses before the next fleecing. Sometimes he would try to spare the mark a bit, so he has a few friends spread out through the region, but for the most part he is also a criminal with a sizable bounty on his head. This went on for years, city to city, town to town, with more than a few dungeons tossed in for good measure.  It all came to a head when the gang went to rob a eligious artifact of Shar’s from some merchant that was being body-guarded by (Player X).  Filled with a religious vision that some things were not for stealing, but rather for hiding, Nymh switched sides mid job after a hastily agreed upon mutual protection agreement was forged. (He did of course procure the item, which he delivered to a temple of Shar)  .  Reece vowed revenge, and unbenkownst to Nymh, Reece had already negotiated the item as tribute to a much larger, much more dangerous gang.
