Hi, Debra,
Welcome to the group.
The holy days have often been referred to by skeptics as the feasts of
Israel or the feasts of the Jews. They contend that those days are not
for Christians. However, Leviticus 23 tells us that the Lord claims
them as His feasts and holy convocations and told Moses to proclaim
them as such.
The first day mentioned is the seventh day Sabbath. There are those
who keep the weekly Sabbath but don't keep the annual Sabbaths. They
are cheating themselves as well as those they teach.
One difficulty for "independent seekers" is the timing of the feasts.
The Jewish Calendar has been our traditional source. Then the
difficulty becomes what some of us consider flaws in the Jewish
Calendar, by the use of "postponements" to a more convenient day, so
that the weekly Sabbath and the annual Sabbath will not be "back to
back". Jewish thought is that two Sabbaths together make it impossible
to prepare meals, etc., so they postpone the annual Sabbath. But,
remember, these are not the feasts of the Jews. These are the feasts
of the Lord. Sabbath was never meant to be a burden and the Lord
demonstrated that He is Lord of the Sabbath. He did what was necessary
to be done.
There are examples of what happens, even to prophets of God, when they
try to change His command. He knows what He is doing. He gave us the
sun and the moon as the most precise instruments of time. They are
signs in the heaven. It's up to us to learn how to read them. It's a
worthwhile study.
