Hi, Debra,
Welcome to the group.
The holy days have often been referred to by skeptics as the feasts of
Israel or the feasts of the Jews. They contend that those days are not
for Christians. However, Leviticus 23 tells us that the Lord claims
them as His feasts and holy convocations and told Moses to proclaim
them as such.
The first day mentioned is the seventh day Sabbath. There are those
who keep the weekly Sabbath but don't keep the annual Sabbaths. They
are cheating themselves as well as those they teach.
One difficulty for "independent seekers" is the timing of the feasts.
The Jewish Calendar has been our traditional source. Then the
difficulty becomes what some of us consider flaws in the Jewish
Calendar, by the use of "postponements" to a more convenient day, so
that the weekly Sabbath and the annual Sabbath will not be "back to
back". Jewish thought is that two Sabbaths together make it impossible
to prepare meals, etc., so they postpone the annual Sabbath. But,
remember, these are not the feasts of the Jews. These are the feasts
of the Lord. Sabbath was never meant to be a burden and the Lord
demonstrated that He is Lord of the Sabbath. He did what was necessary
to be done.
There are examples of what happens, even to prophets of God, when they
try to change His command. He knows what He is doing. He gave us the
sun and the moon as the most precise instruments of time. They are
signs in the heaven. It's up to us to learn how to read them. It's a
worthwhile study.

Hello Theda,
You are right, And man should not try to change anything that God has
Commanded. The Lord has given us so much of His Wonderful Word to
study,
And His Word is Anew and Fresh everyday. Revelation 22:14 Blessed are
they who do His Commandments that they may have the right to the Tree
of Life and may enter in through the gates into the City........
How Wonderful of a Lord we serve to give us these Feasts and Holy
Days, I can't even imagine how Heaven is..........The Lord Himself is
so Holy and to sit here and think that someday we will be with Him is
just so Wonderful. How incrediable is that.......

Hello,

I'm curious and would like to ask the people here who keep the annual
Sabbaths, how did you first come to learn to keep them?

Me, I learned about the Sabbaths through Herbert Armstrong and the
Worldwide Church of God in 1976. I'm not saying everything he taught
was correct, but I'm thankful to have learned this through him. Now in
2009 I've learned that people keep the annual Sabbaths on different
days and why, and that's a different discussion, but I'm more curious
to ask how people first came to understand and keep these days.

I've also learned that Herbert Armstrong learned this from the Church
of God Seventh Day before he left it, so there is probably another
branch or more that went out from the Church of God Seventh Day. I
think the Sacred Name groups are part of that branch.

I recently met someone who came to this understanding through a group
of Sabbath keeping Jehovah's Witnesses. Even though they were only
keeping the weekly Sabbath and Passover, she gained the understanding
to keep all the annual Sabbaths. So now I'm curious to know how else
this understanding came to people.

Hey, Pat,
I was in my early teens when I read about the Feasts of the Lord in
Lev. 23. I asked one of the teachers at church how we got from those
Feasts of the Lord to Christmas, etc. I was soundly ridiculed for
asking such a stupid question. But even then "throughout all
generations" seemed to mean even now.
The year that Central High School was closed (1958-59) I was accepted
by a small SDA church school where my suspicions about Sunday vs.
Sabbath were confirmed. But they didn't know anything about the Lord's
feasts other than Sabbath. The"fourteenth day of the first month"
seemed like an insurmountable problem for me. It was not until GTA on
the World Tomorrow broadcast began talking about the Feast days that I
had that "Ah-ha!" moment.
I was never in Worldwide but I read the literature and took the
correspondence course. The thing that attracted me (and many others)
was that they were reading the same thing that I was reading in my own
bible. That was the only encouragement I received in those years of
trying to find my way despite the low opinion my family had of me. I
appreciate GTA and HWA for their service to God and to us. So, they
weren't perfect. I'm not either. But, be patient, God isn't finished
with me yet!

I was just into my twenties when I began reading the Plain Truth studying the literature from "Ambassador College," after listening to a radio broadcast by one of the Armstong's either HWA or GTA.  The Holy Days were a part of that.  I had grown up celebrating Christmas and Easter but my husband (now ex-husband) who was never a part of the WWC tradition didn't celebrate those days so that was a helpful transition on some levels.

And what a wonderful plan God has and reveals through those benchmarks.  How Great, Loving and Merciful God really is starts with the bedrock sacrifice of Jesus Christ, our brother, and expands from there to the coming kingdom and future resurrections that are rehearsed through the Holy Days.  More and more my experience is how much the meanings overlap in various Holy Days and how they emphasize all phases of God's plan that we can now glimpse in part and appreciate in part but will experience someday in the fullness of God realm.

Hi Theda,

Wow, does that mean you've been keeping the holy days alone all these
years? Are you able to meet with a group for the weekly Sabbath?

After Worldwide did a 180 on all their beliefs, I later attended a
spin-off independent group (no pastor) and then a Seventh Day Baptist
church. I don't match all their beliefs, but they're okay with that
and it works. I'm happy to have a group to interact with.

Not alone. I was with the Lord.
It was a struggle at work having to work weekends more often than not.
Eventually I had seniority and could choose my schedule. Until then I
just did the best I could, acknowledging the beginning and ending of
Sabbath and praying for the time when I could keep Sabbath properly. I
worked at a hospital and knew that there are things that must be done,
even on Sabbath. When my duties changed and I found myself closed in a
room with no windows, counting money, making bank deposits I knew I
had to make a change. So, I did. My parents had a print shop. Dad
worked Saturdays setting up jobs for me to run on Sunday. When I
eventually went back to the hospital, by volunteering to work every
Sunday I was allowed to be off Sabbath. Then I transfered to ER where
I had to take what was available. Every Friday night at sundown I'd
take a break outside, watch the sunset, acknowledge Sabbath and ask
God to help me with my schedule. Within a very short time I had
seniority and the schedule I needed, off Friday and Saturday, working
on Sunday, Christimas, Easter. There was no competition for the
schedule that was perfect for me.
I took off for the annual feast days using the Jewish Calendar as my
guide. I had become disenchanted with WW long before then. After
completing the Bible Correspondence Course I received a letter stating
that if I was not ready by then to request a visit from a minister,
then I never would be. I never could see that a particular church or
group was an intermediary between God and me. I had been baptized at
the church where I had grown up and where I asked that "stupid"
question about the holy days. Spiritually, I had outgrown the
teachings of that particular congregation. It was not until years
later that I called after one of the GTA's broadcasts (it was CGI by
then) to ask about a minister here. Turns out that minister was right
there by the phone and that he lived within a mile of my address. If I
recall correctly he was not officially a "minister" until after one of
GTA's debacles and when the local group withdrew from CGI.
This is a good place to say that ministerial credentials come straight
from God and need not be written on a piece of paper or filtered
through any particular "church" organization. We are what we do. One
who ministers is a minister. That man was Jim Ussery. It was Jim who
called my attention to the calendar controversy.Jim financed the Ten
Commandments Calendar project until he died two years ago. Dot Ussery
remains my friend and oftentimes counselor. She ministers, too.
That congregation, Church of God of Central Arkansas, is very dear to
me and even though I have not been able to physically attend in
several years I still claim to be part of that group.
I've learned that, while it is ideal to be able to congregate with
like minded Christians and to physically attend the Lord's feasts, it
is also possible to keep the feasts and Sabbaths despite physical
isolation. The Spirit is not limited geographically or physically.
"Church" is not the building on the corner. It's people, the called
out ones, ekklesia, who are church. As one wit put it, "Church R Us".
We can convene with each other, in the Spirit, on Sabbaths and Feasts,
as wells as other times when there are physical constraints.
Here's a thought: "As a man thinketh in his heart, so also is he."
That's written somewhere but I can't find the source just now. It
sounds very much like the new covenant.
So, here we are, visiting by this nifty means of cyberspace and
Google.
I hope you'll share your Feast with me. Feast reports not only extend
the experience to others, they are great memory refreshers for years
ahead.

Hi, Mary,
My family were all appalled when I told them I didn't want to
celebrate Christmas anymore. I don't think they ever quite understood.
They seemed to think that by rejecting Christmas, Sunday, and
questioning what they had taught me, that I was rejecting them. They
were so ashamed f me.
The Plain Truth magazine was a real blessing to us.
Bucking tradition is difficult at best, especially when that's all
we've known and been taught from childhood, and everyone else thinks
differently. It's much easier if there is at least one other who sees
the same thing you see. That's why we need each other. The Armstrong's
were strong allies in overcoming vain tradition.
The time came when I knew there would be no more Christmas trees for
me. So, I had to have just one last one to say goodbye. And, yes, it
was every bit as void of meaning and sustenance to me as all false
idols ultimately become. They've never appealed to me since, being
empty and vain and promising only disappointment. What a contrast we
find in the Feasts of the Lord, being pertinent throughout all
generations and spelling out the whole plan for mankind.

Everyone,
This is a good place to ask you to complete your profiles. It doesn't
have to be lengthy or in great detail but just a few words to
introduce yourself to the group.
Thanks!

Hi,
My name is John.
I live in Big Sandy, Texas. I have one wife, two children (a girl and a boy, both in their 30's), and four grandchildren (two boys and two girls, ages 10-two months).
I grew up in Maine, lived 14 months in New Hampshire and 36 years in Texas.
My mother was baptized in 1959 when I was six by Radio Church of God ministers who were students from Ambassador College.
I attended my first holy days in 1963 in New York City. My first Feast of Tabernacles was in 1964 at Jekyll Island, Ga.
I was baptized in 1974 while attending Ambassador College in Big Sandy.
I attend services with the Texas Fellowship and will be at an independent feast site at Orange Beach, Alabama this year.

I love Perry Stone's enthusiasm. He (like the rest of us) is still
learning. My prayer for him, as well as for J R Church and Gary
Stearman, is that since they already have a widespread audience that
they will continue to learn about God's Sabbaths and Feasts and share
that knowledge with the audience they already have.
They are all "coming right along". They seem to be sincere and eager
for more of God's truth. It will take courage for them to publicly
denounce Sunday and the Beast Marks while declaring the Sign of the
Creator. I'm watching for them to announce that Sabbath is not Sunday.
Your prayers along this line can only help!
