used to commit random acts of senseless kindness. Jump-started dozens of vehicles, replaced a water pump on an old man's car once in 104 degree heat, pushed a lady with a car full of kids to a gas station (tearing the vinyl off my bumper in the process). Drove another senior 10 miles to get a replacement radiator hose, then put it on for him on the side of the highway. Other things too, but you get the drift.
am not particularly good, or noble, or noteworthy. People used to do this sort of thing all the time. Not for praise or money, just because.
can't do this anymore. One beating, several cussings from wrecker drivers, and an attempted carjacking have driven home an ugly message: common courtesy is neither wanted not appreciated any more.
