Now, I know that all of you have a love of the SSPC bordering on obsession, but you must try to calm your rabid fanaticism for a bit so that we can discuss something:

Expansion.

The SSPC is going great as of now, but we have 11 members, only about half of which contribute.  We need to expand.  First, the most obvious way: do you know anyone who likes philosophy?  Invite them in.  Do you know anyone who doesn't know very much about philosophy, but you think would be interested - and has potential as far as learning it goes?  Invite them.  That should get us quite a few more, to start with.  Next, more desperate measures:  are you active on any Internet communities?  Invite people from there.  We don't care where people actually are, as long as they can contribute.

Paul and I are working on a standard advertisement poster that can be placed up anywhere, to recruit interested strangers.  If you're artistic, send one of us a personal email and you can help out.

Any other ideas?

I'm not sure whether I can contribute to the poster through email. How about when I come on Sunday? And that question was out of curiosity and I got a bit carried away. Whoops!

I do.  I'll check that out, but I'm a bit unlikely to actually put money into advertising.

Copy and pasted from the Facebook site:
Daily BudgetWhat is the most you want to spend per day? (min 1.00 USD)

For your ad to appear frequently, have fun spending $50 dollars a day. O_o
I actually have tons o' online friends who would join. :3

It costs about 50.00 for it to appear frequently.

we want a FREE method of advertisment. as in posters to put up around schools. or word of mouth. easy stuff. online ads are for non-creative enterprising fools. we are creative enterprising fools.

Once this becomes official and a school club, will it be called YPC (Young Philosopher's Club)? Should this be part of extra-curricular activities?

If you want to make a school club, go ahead, call it what you want - remember, we are completely decentralised, nothing is official, the term SSPC is just something someone can describe themselves with and know they'll have an interesting conversation with anyone else.

also, about the school club, you dont need to go around calling it the sspc- call it whatever you want- just link it in to the sspc.
we want to establish a sort of logging procedure for live conversation, (and non-live convo) so that the sspc is just an overarchin, decentralised ring of discussion groups that share info, etc.

david- correct me if this doesnt quite cover it

I will every other day post a Tweet about SSPC which I currently have
954 followers (w00t!) so that should help, and I could probably get
some other ways of promoting it like on the side of the cfori.tk site
(which right now is dead but comes back in the summer, which hopefully
then when we start doing more activity again will recieve more viewrs,
right now thers just an amusing cat on the homepage..). Also I can get
in contact with some other Twitterholics and get some circulation
about the SSPC going out, and if I get a .tk domain that redirects
here I can get free ads to this group with .tk Net or something like
that so yeah I will try to get the SSPC's name out there.

Ok so to use TiKinet (which lets us have free advertising) I got us a
free redirect url: sspc.tk. If you notice on this url there are ads at
the top, but that is the payment for getting other .tk sites to have
our ad on the top. And there are lots of tks out there, so maybe this
will get us some traffic; I'll track the link and see if its useful or
not.

That's good, thanks, although this doesn't mean we should disregard the boring, and probably more effective, spreading - by word of mouth to friends, acquaintances etc.  They're more likely to listen to us, and more likely to be good at debate.

well, the flier is gone. i dont see it on the files page.

Also, this being a discussion group, after all, if you dont like it dont just state that fact, state why too. 'its stupid...' doesn't help us very much if we want to try to fix it....

This was supposed to be a simple, fun group; next day, it's technologized. Plus, I asked you if you wanted a site a day ago, you said no. Ironic.

how is this:
'but if you want to go ahead, by all means. '

equivalent to no?

the 'website' is just where we are hosting this mailing list from,  the twitter is a method of advertisement. (and its not like /our/ twitter. its someone else's, who is making occasional posts about us)

anyway, please do make a website- we would do well to have a lot of methods to communicate/advertise/store data on.

Yeah.  I'm making this as decentralised as possible.  If anyone wants to make anything, go ahead, but don't claim it's official or anything. I'll post up a few "Standards" of the Society of Scientists, Philosophers, and People of Culture (SSPC) on the groups page.  A few things:  don't claim anything's official, link back to all other sspc pages, and host a copy of this document.  Some others, too, like links to the argumentation stuff.

I don't see the flyer either.  And also, when making it, please use an open format.  OpenOffice, PDF or something, some of us either use macs (and I pity them), or don't want to waste money on crap software when better stuff is free.

its not a /new/ group, at least not if This is what you are referencing. that group is a necessity- this mailing list is hosted from there. David M and I made a few pages on there, none of which claim to be official, in fact all of them claim the exact opposite. it only 'looks' official because its all we have at the moment. (also, what is this website you are talking about? i have found none)

sspc.tk is just a redirect url to the google group, its not a webpage. and the twitter is mine, I just will tweet about it. nothing official. i made the website so if one asked: "What website is the sspc on?" another could say "sspc.tk!"

WELL HELLO.

hi.
long time no post. you thought we were dead, didn't you?
WELL YOU WERE WRONG.

*ahem*

ANYWAY. so this weekend in Washington DC, there will be a meeting of a group called 'Cafe Philo', a philosophy discussion group, discussion whether or not mathematics is a human construct. it may sound like a boring topic, but i assure you that it will be interesting. this is an open invitation to anyone in here to come. i will be posting the details momentarily, so hang tight.
