The first day of cheder is a momentous time. It is the time when the year’s goals and aspirations are laid out. It is a peak moment of excitement for children.

Enter bad guys. In recent years someone realized that this day is a wonderful opportunity in-the-waiting. They decided to bring politicians and policemen to give divrei chizuk and brachah on the opening day of cheder.

This year in Bnei Brak the President of Israel visited a cheder and yeshiva. He gave the warmest brachah he could conjure; “May you come to love the State of Israel and the Tz’vah Haganah L’yisrael.” And in Yerushalayim a senior police official made his rounds to open the chadarim there.

It has not been reported if they mentioned the age-old custom of wrapping a child in a talis when bringing him to cheder in order to protect him from harmful influences.
