u On Shabbos Parshas Va’eschanan, in Yerushalayim, a four year old boy tragically choked and R”L died. As heartbreaking as losing a young child is, the grief was intensified as the police decided that an autopsy must be performed. The body was then transferred to the infamous Abu-Kabir institute, well-known for the many autopsy battles that have been waged there. Although the State of Israel is notorious for their appetite to perform autopsies, it is ironic that they insist on performing it even when the cause of death is crystal clear. Evidently they are not seeking the cause of death, but rather, in the best case scenario are interested in scientific study, and in the worst case are looking to chip away at the religious concept of hasharas hanefesh.
When the public heard of the proposed autopsy, they were incensed, and immediately took to the streets in Yeruashalyim, Bnei Brak, Beit Shemesh, Modiin Ilit, and Tzefas to protest. The police went to court to obtain a warrant to perform the autopsy, and the court consented. Undeterred, the ehriche askanim filed an appeal to combat the ruling. In a miraculous turn-of-events, together with the merit of the mesiras nefesh of the protestors, and the threat of nationwide massive protests, the court made a sudden about-face, and ordered the return of the body for burial.
The underlying message of this story, is the true and tried Israeli system; the authorities will attempt to carry out heinous anti-religious measures. Should the public remain silent and accept the actions, the authorities will be unrestrained in their edicts. However should the public arise and take to the streets in civil disobedience, the authorities will BS”D cave-in and rescind their decrees.
u On Monday [Eikev] a bocher drowned in the Netanyah Ocean. He was standing in shallow water, when a wave descended upon him a dragged him under. He was miraculously revived, but is in very serious condition. The bocher learns in Yeshivas Knesses Yitzchok - Chadera. He is said to be an unusual masmid who does not speak trivial talk. He reportedly has sedarim when he learns fourteen hour straight. He is also a Ben-Aliya, one who has never reported to the draft office.
