In Christian Science history July 16TH, stands as
a most memorable date.
At eight o'clock in the morning in a very simple
ceremony the cornerstone for the Extension of
The Mother Church was laid July 16TH, 1904.
The history of this event is recorded on page 106,
in Joseph Armstrong and Margaret Williamson's book,
"Building Of The Mother Church".
It is interesting to me to contemplate that while
the original edifice of The First Church of Christ,
Scientist, in Boston, Ma., is replete with beautifully
rendered hand-painted figures in stained glass, bringing
the Bible to life, the extension is adorned with not
one human form. Instead its windows display beautiful
fruits, fruitage if you will, and its walls provide words
by Christ Jesus, Paul, John, and our Pastor Emeritus.
What is telling to this present age, our Leader appears to
have graphically indicated, engraved in fact on the walls
of the Extension, her preference that any reference to her,
should one not wish to continually give forth her full name,
how she wishes to be referenced. Her words inscribed
on the walls in every instance are followed by the writer's
name which again in each and every case is given as
"Mrs. Eddy".
Is not this a clear call broadcast down through the years to
us for us to refer to her *never* as Eddy, rather as she herself
shows us, as our own, dear, loved, and revered "Mrs. Eddy"?
The other July 16TH, in Christian Science history
of course took place in 1821, in Bow, New Hampshire, where
Mary Morse Baker, who later became the Reverend Mary Baker Eddy,
made her first appearance on earth.
It is always an honor for me to pay tribute to the
Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science on
this most special of days.
