KJV BIBLE VERSES AND THEIR SOURCES HEADING
THE CHAPTERS IN "SCIENCE AND HEALTH WITH KEY
TO THE SCRIPTURES", BY MARY BAKER EDDY
According to the Amplified Edition of "MARY BAKER EDDY,
CHRISTIAN HEALER", by Yvonne von Fettweis and Robert
Townsend Warneck, the fiftieth edition of the Christian Science
textbook was the edition that provided Scriptural citations at the
beginning of each chapter. The year was 1891.
After several differences with one of her editors, James Henry
Wiggin, regarding the use of other Bible versions, the Amplified
Edition of "MARY BAKER EDDY, CHRISTIAN HEALER", advises
that Mrs. Eddy demanded in 1902, that *all* Scriptural citations in the
textbook come from the King James Version. (See pages 205-206).
These actions fairly demonstrate that when Mary Baker Eddy
explains in her Explanatory Note for each Sunday's
Bible Lesson that Scriptural texts and their correlative passages
from our denominational textbook will be read, she is indicating
that the Christian Science textbook is specifically *correlative* to
the King James Version of the Bible, and not some other version.
If one were to dig out each cornerstone of The Mother Church
and its Extension, the two books now forevermore known as
our Pastor, one would find the Christian Science textbook and
the Holy Bible, that Mrs. Eddy referred to time and again as
our Authorized Version, that it is the King James Version that
is placed in each of those cornerstones, and not some other
version of the Bible.
When it came to my attention that a long time member of a
local branch church had never even noticed the Scriptural
citations at the beginning of the chapters in Science
and Health, and had no understanding that Mrs. Eddy was
quite clear in her requirement that they come from the King
James Version alone, I looked at these citations more carefully.
For the first time I noticed that while the author of the verse or the
book of the Bible is given after the verse, the exact location of
those verses is not provided. Here we have an opportunity
to do some thinking ourselves and consider the location of those
specific verses found in the King James Version which grace
each chapter's heading in Science and Health.
Thus, so there be no mistake that no other version besides the
KJV were utilized for these important portions of Scripture in our
textbook, here below are the Bible citations given for each chapter
along with their respective sources. It should be noted that
Chapter X is the only chapter in the textbook that includes a
heading not found in any Bible version. That important reference
is found in the information as given below.
CHAPTER I. PRAYER
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain,Be thou removed, and be thou
cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall
come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire
when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Your Father knoweth what things ye
have need of, before ye ask Him. -- CHRIST JESUS.
