Bencic won Tokyo after playing very tough matches, until the final.  She is top seed in Hong Kong, with Leylah Fernandez hugging the no 2 spot.  Another interesting player in the draw is Vicky Mboko, who seems to have her mojo back.  I think she is scheduled to meet Leylah at some point in the draw…maybe 3rd round.  Can’t remember. Think this the last official week of WTA Calendar schedule.

Mboko wins in 3 sets.  Hopefully she wins her next round where she will be facing this Alex Eala. Mboko has more tennis talent, but Eala can be a tricky player….and she isn’t as good as she thinks, or some people think either.   We shall see tomorrow.

Miss_Vee, why dismiss Eala like that?🤣

Eala was the juniour USO champ a few years ago, and I never even knew that about her.  I’m sure she has some gifts, but she mostly plays 125 and 250 level tournaments.  I will never say never about her, but at this stage she needs to do more work on her total game.  She is feisty, and never gives up.  If Mboko has a bad day, Eala will beat her.

Mboko has beaten Eala just minutes ago in 3 tough sets.  Eala took the first set.  Mboko went down a break in the third, but roared back from 1-4 to win the last 5 games of the set, and win the match.  She now faces Kalinskaya, and her potential SF opponent might be Fernandez.  How cruel for Canada….lol.

That was a good fight from Mboko.

Gosh I have the SF that I was hoping for in Hong Kong.  It’s Fernandez vs Mboko tomorrow!  🥳!  Kalinskaya retired from the match vs Mboko, and it seems she was injured.  Leylah dismissed Cirstea in straight sets.  Leylah will not want Mboko to have the upper hand by losing to her, so this will be a dog fight…lol.  Wish I could see this match live on TV.

Just realized that Bencic withdrew from the tournament in Hong Kong.  Busca is now playing Maya Joint in SF.  Joint is another up and coming WTA player in her teens, and has won 3 titles this year including Eastbourne.  Not too shabby, except that final played against Eala was ugly…lol.  Took 3 hours.

Vicky Mboko is into the final of Hong Kong.  She beat Leylah Fernandez 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.  Just saw an extended clip, and for a set, she was outfoxed by Leylah….couldn’t get her game together because of Leylah’s aggression and her variety of shot.  However she became sturdier in the second set, and by the third she ran away with it.  Good luck to Mboko tomorrow against Busca, who beat Maya Joint easily.  That result surprised me.

Mboko is Champion in Hong Kong!  Congratulations Vicky!  From the match report it was a very tough match in the first 2 sets, but Mboko turned it on the 3rd set after wasting match points in the second set.  So proud of Mboko!  2 WTA titles in her first year on tour, and her game still needs improvement.  Cannot for Australia 2026….lol.
