WTA Finals groups are out:

GROUP STEFFI GRAF
Sabalenka
Gauff
Pegula
Paolini

GROUP SERENA WILLIAMS
Swiatek
Anisimova
Rybakina
Keys

Definitely feels like the Serena group is the group of death too many big hitters in one group…. I don’t know what to think… how do you guys feel about this?

Isn’t that crazy how lopsided these groups are no excuse for Sabalenka and Cock to not do well in that cream puff group … rooting for Amanda but that group is dangerously anyone of those girls can get hot and it’s over

Keys might show up to collect first round check and then get injured, hopefully she surprises us but I doubt it. Anisimova is definitely the one to beat in that group.
Sabalenka should be able to sweep that group, but watch her hit everything outside the double's alley. Coco will find a way to grind it to the SFs.

Just saw the groups on the WTA website.  I’m totally befuddled by the groupings as well…..lol.  As you said Bianca , the Serena Williams group looks like the group of death.  How did this happen?  No reason for either Gauff or Sabalenka not to get to the semis.
Don’t know whom to pick in the other group….😂

Bianca, I think Amanda will be ok. The good thing is they get to play more than 1 match. If she starts slow, she has another chance to come back stronger in the next 2 matches.
I am more concerned about Coco, if her game is off, all those girls in her group can take her out.

I have the feeling that Coco has been quietly working on her serve and forehand recently.  She has to do so, in order to stay at the top of the game.  Let’s see in a couple of days.

Missvee I disagree with the statement about staying at the top of the game, we agree coco has an atrocious forehand and her served abandoned her when that forehand is letting her down.you know what is cocos problem ? Herself; she gets on her own way.what is the one thing we all like about coco.her love and professionalism for the game her never say never attitude, but that last one changed once she put all that weight on her shoulders about having to win ;be the American top female player, being a girl of color who will be compared to her predecessors,Venus and Serena.that became a big thing for coco . She needs to just enjoy the game, open those shoulders and let it ripped . In tennis as many other sports you don’t win everything.coco needs to work on that mental aspect.she looks stressed and sometimes defeated as soon as she steps on that court.Hoping she can get that fixed ,get that energy back and enjoy herself out there.

Sabalenka looks great as well. Think I see Rybakina in the background and she also look fab.  Don’t see Coco yet.
Keys needed to wear a different structure of dress….maybe a column dress, or something.

Rybakina, that is an outfit I would wear on Saturday, just chilling in my neighborhood. I like it but not for this occassion.
Paolini, yes from me.
Coco, what is that Garbage bag material?
Amanda, hmm...
Pegula and Keys went to the same thrift store, nothing interesting about those 2 outfits.
Sabalenka is ok, she chose something that does her well.

Sugar, it’s obvious that none of them have stylists!   I imagine that many of these girls are not into fashion, or even have any idea how to put together an outfit for every day dressing.  I usually see these girls in sweats or jeans, or shorts.
Have to cut them slack, because playing tennis is their priority, as it should be during their active careers.

Rybakina is back to her best self.  She’s playing unbelievable tennis.  When Iga beat her this year twice or three times, she was struggling for form.  Had not been consistent since the end of last year, and was without her “abusive” coach as some people have alleged.

Since the USO, she has been playing extremely well. Iga is also playing well at the moment, so we shall see what happens in a couple of days.

Btw, has Keys withdrawn from the tournament? 😳

Bianca, now you know what we were talking about re:Coco’s game.  Tennis fans everywhere keep talking about her ugly tennis, but she is winning GS titles with that serve and forehand.  I remember Mary Jo and Chris Evert, practically begging her to take at least 6 months away from the tour when she was around 17/18 years old.  They said she was young enough to rebuild her ranking if she went and fixed those 2 strokes at her age then.  Her parents didn’t heed that advice.  Sek had said then that the financial offers were too lucrative for them ignore at that point.

It’s beginning to cause her match wins.  Sure she win RG this year, and also another tournament in China.  However Mboko destroyed her in Montreal after she had beaten Mboko earlier in the season. She will face more embarrassing losses if that serve isn’t fixed.  She is now becoming mentally frustrated with those 2 strokes.  It wears on her now.

Pp

Please note:

Gauff had 3 double faults today.

Gauff also won 15 of her 20 2nd second serves today (75% win rate on 2nd serves, that is pretty high rate for 2nd serves).

Of the five second serves points she loss today, 3 were double faults (points that she gave away for free).  So that means she only loss two of her second serves points that were in play.

Paolini was not able to exploit any weakness in Gauff’s second serve, today (or maybe today there was no weakness).

On the other hand, Paolini only won points on 4 of her 19 second serves. Paolini did not have any double faults (no free points give away).  Gauff exploited the hell out of  Paolini’s 2nd serve.

Paolini really should not be playing in the WTA singles event.  I’m aware that she qualified for singles and doubles event.  However she isn’t playing well in singles.  Don’t know if she and Errani won their matches in the doubles event so far.  She is listless on court.  Should have given up her spot in singles.

Not so fast Sekasi.  Give Mboko another couple of years.  That girl, if she stays healthy, will be in the top 10 before you know it.  Not trying to jinx her, but I see great things ahead for  Mboko, as long as she keeps a steady head on her shoulders.  From what I’m seeing and hearing from her….she seems to be in the right track.

Bianca, you may not be aware of this, but Jessica early this year put an end to their doubles partnership.  They remain friends, but don’t play together any longer.  However they have to be pitted in singles tournaments against each other.  Coco doesn’t have to stay away,  it she has to improve that serve and forehand.  Just think how good Coco could be, if those 2 tremendous liabilities in her game just disappeared in the next year or so.

On that topic, in my mind Gauff’s parents pushing her into the WTA at age 15/16 interfered with the normal development in her game.  I believe that although she probably needed higher competition, because she wasn’t strong enough physically, something was compromised in the development of those very 2 important strokes.  Just my guess.

B, I get it but cocos problem is deeper than her becoming friends and believe I agree with you to some degrees. I always said this once Serena became friendly with some of her main rivals she didn’t play with the same intensity against them as when they were not “friends”. Coco is technique wise.we love the girl but once you nailed her forehand and that shot becomes more unreliable and ugly everything else crumbles. She honestly needs to go back to the drawing board. Her forehand is too extreme ,swing not compact enough .she can’t hit though the ball to save her life .

Well Fedex, Rybakina did exactly what you said earlier.  I just returned home to catch the end of the match.  Rybakina needs to completely reverse that H2H that Pegula has on her.  Jessica got those wins before 2022 or 2023.  Last two meetings ( this result included), Rybakina has won them both.  Maybe it’s now like 5-4 in Pegula’s favour.

Was hoping to see Rybakina in the final, because she has been playing so well after the USO.

Anisimova is so tough!  What a difference in Amanda from 2 years ago.  She has really come into her own.  Plays with so much confidence now, and her game is so fun to watch also.  Always loved her game since I first saw her at age 16, when she beat Kvitova 6-4, 6-4 at Indian Wells.

Oh no!  Anisimova lost her serve to go down 3-4.  This match is crazy!

Both Rybakina and Sabalenka deserve to be in the final, because neither have dropped a match heading into the final match tomorrow.  Undefeated champion walks away with over $5 million dollars in prize money.

I’m sure everyone has seen the tape on Rybakina’s right shoulder, which has been used as protective measure, in the last couple of days.  I think she has played every tournament since Beijing.  She also said that she never expected to reach the final in Riyadh…lol.  Just heard that she’s now concerned about her right shoulder,,and hopes that she will not make it worse by playing tomorrow.   Anyway, she’s hoping that her physio can help her to recover by the time the match begins tomorrow.

Just watched Rybakina and Pegula match.  Rybakina doesn’t usually have so many UE, and I think the shoulder had a lot to do with it.  Hope that’s she is able to play a good final tomorrow.  At least with her UE, her game is so buttery smooth, I didn’t even notice the errors. She had 36/winners….15 aces….lol.
Pegula had 9 winners 41 UE.  If she had won this match, I would have disowned Rybakina as a fan.

Here we go again apparently Amanda and Sabkenka are “friends”  girl this girl has beaten you in in the USO final and WTA semis you need to hate her the same way see red when Iga is on the other side of the net. This isn’t Best Friends Association it’s the WTA this is competition….. what am I missing?

Really Bianca?  I wasn’t aware that they are “friends.”  Mind you, I suppose Amanda can speak and understand Russian even though she was born in the U.S.  Her parents must speak Russian.  Her sister was born in Russia.  Sabalenka is from Belarus, and they all speak Russian.  Amanda will win the next one. Amanda seemed to fade away in the end.

I can't be bothered about this final. Amanda needs to work on her mental state in these big matches. Give Serena a call.

I’m with Sek I don’t give a damn who wins …. If Amanda doesn’t learn how to close out these big matches she will end up like Nadia Petrova or crazy Vera

Well y’all!  I’m thrilled that Rybakina won today.  I’m watching the recorded match now. Fedex, you called it.  You said that Rybakina looked the best all tournament….in fact, leading up to Riyadh, she was on a rip and a tear.  Everything came together for her at season’s end.  Her stats were terrific today, unlike yesterday.  She definitely deserved the title.  Congrats to her.  Love her game….her personality?!?  Whatever.  We all can’t have everything…..lol

WTA players that I’m going to be rooting for in 2026 are Mboko, Fernandez, Osaka, Anisimova, Rybakina….not necessarily in that order.  However Mboko tops the list now.

Oh, cannot forget Andreescu.  Still would like to see her come back all the way, but I’m cautious now, because she is injured too often.

The reason I’m so interested in Amanda is because her game reminds me of me of the WS she doesn’t have their speed ,movement or mental toughness however off the ground she is there … I love watching her hit .. the velocity, the power, the ability to to hit a winner off anything , the angles the match is always on her racket to win or lose solely because of her gifts I love it …. I just need her win one of these major finals next time she is in one ……not as invested in Coco because she has 2 slams she has nothing to prove…. Amanda still has the pressure of winning a slam on her shoulders

I hear you Bianca, because I have been always interested in watching Amanda play tennis.  Love her game.  When she went through that awful period after her Dad’s passing, she was a mess, and she had lost me for a nanosecond.  However, after she took time away from the tour and returned refreshed, and now she is here….in the top 10.  Very happy for her,  I’m excited for 2026.

Oh man!  I heard on a tennis podcast that Rybakina had refused to take a congratulatory picture with the WTA CEO, who would have been standing between her and Sabalenka.  Oops….now the incident in which Vukov was banned as a coach for several months, has reared its ugly head again.  Omg!  I had almost forgotten about it.  Rybakina just needed to take the pic.  Good lord!  Now I’m reminded again about the reason that I had taken a step back from her, because I thought she downplaying the abuse.  I have to say that since he was re-instated as her coach, I don’t see behaviour that we were all witnessing ourselves, from his behaviour in the stands 2 or 3 years ago.

I hope that she is in a good place mentally and physically, because she seems to be back to the person whom the tennis world expected to have a substantial impact on the sport.  We shall see what transpires in 7 weeks.

You know what, to each their own.  seems like Vukov couldn't have been that bad since her mental state and mood seemingly improved when he got back in.  It's a weird dynamic they have going on
