The WTA is usually well represented by the top 10 players in this event in Canada.  It has been only in the last 2-3 years that I haven’t seen the top ATP players in Canada.

Anyway, everyone in the top 10, except Sabalenka ( fatigue), Zheng (out due to surgery on her arm), and Badosa (injury) is in Mtl.  This should be a highly competitive tournament.  It starts tomorrow also.

Here’s a look at tomorrow’s lineup….lol.  This tournament starts off with a bang!

Vondrousova vs Eala
Andreescu vs Krejikova (cannot believe this one.  2 GS champs duking it out first round of a big tournament).
Mboko vs Birrell

That is a good line-up, I wonder if TTC will air any of them.

I see a local TV station is carrying the telecast.  Don’t know where the source of our feed.  Anyway, Mboko just played a terrific match to take out Kimberley Birrell of Australia, in str8s. 7-5, 6-2.

Looking forward to Andreescu vs Krejikova at 7 p.m.

Can you believe it?  Andreescu was running for a ball that Krejikova had hit crosscourt.  She twisted her ankle badly while trying to turn back.  She fell and is in obvious pain.  She is at match point…her second match point.

A clearly hobbled Andreescu won the match.  Will she be able to take the court against Andreeva in 2 days?  I can feel another injury rehab for Bianca.  As Cry would say….Andreescu needs to retire from the sport in order to stay healthy.  Like my favourite gentle giant…the Argentine…what’s his name…😂, she is always out with injury or illness.

Thank you Sek.  That was a complete brain fart.  I’m noticing that is happening now more often….😂

Anyway today’s line up is kinda interesting.
Raducanu vs Ruse
Osaka vs Arsenault ( a young Canadian)
Bouchard vs Arango ( Genie will be playing her final match, because she will not beat Arango).  Retirement ceremony afterwards.

Ok Sek.  I have no idea really.  Genie hasn’t played tennis in a long time…maybe over a year and a bit.  Maybe anything is possible.
However, the real tournament starts about Thursday or Friday this week….especially on the men’s side.

Raducanu has a chance to be seeded at the USO if she goes deep here in Canada, or in Cincinnati in 2 weeks.  She is ranked # 33 now.
Leylah Fernandez has reached #24 with her win yesterday.  She has had a better career so far, in terms of seeding since the USO 2021.

Bianca, you are so hilarious.  To be honest, I think tomorrow on the WTA side, we will start seeing more competitive matches.  I was watching Bouchard intermittently, because she is supposed to retire at the event in Montreal, because that’s where it all started for her.  Anyway, she won tonight.

I cannot sit through these matches like back in the day when it when tennis was at its best with Venus, Serena, Davenport, Hingis , Clijsters, Capriati etc, were at their best.  These days, the players who make these matches interesting are few and far between.  These big tournaments in Toronto, Montreal, and then Cincy offers the best viewing leading up to the USO.

More focused on WTA until Friday, because they have more potentially interesting matches on tap today.

Leylah Fernandez vs Maya Joint
Mirra Andreeva vs Bianca Andreescu (I hope Bianca’s ankle is ok.)
Coco Gauff vs Danimal Collins
Victoria Mboko vs Sofia Kenin ( this is the most interesting one, because I think Victoria has a good chance to win).
Baptiste vs Rybakina

I’m so tired of watching Andreescu always being injured.   I cannot imagine how tough it must be for her.  She must have a brittle body, just like Muchova.  So much fun to watch, but cannot sustain any modicum of health to keep her playing on tour.  She withdrew from her second round match against Andreeva.

Match stats for Gauff: 23 DF, 30 Winners 74 UE.  For Collins 13 DF, 23 Winners and 80 UE.  I couldn’t watch most of this match.

Now I’m hoping that one Canadian can win a match today.  Mboko takes on Kenin, who is very experienced and a GS champ .  Let’s go Victoria.

Mboko is really impressive as a new face on the pro tour.  She really is taking Kenin to the cleaners in this first set.  Kenin has taken a BRB.  Let’s go Victoria.   She has such a great serve, and easy ground strokes.  Very explosive off the ground.  She has great defence and speed around the court.  She can only get better.

Sek, we have a star in the making from Canada.  Her parents hailed from either Congo or Senegal.  Trying to recall.  Will check again.  Born in the U.S, but they came to Canada when she was a baby.  Anyway she is Canadian.  Her game reminds me of a young Serena.  So powerful, and easy power.  Similar court coverage.  She is so well prepared for these matches, and is learning how to play on the WTA.  She hit 2 aces to win the match vs Kenin.  She is awesome to watch.

I see that Osaka was down two match points and ended up winning in 3.  if you think about it, she wins when she isn't hitting crazy winners but rather just hits it deep/hard/flat up the middle and draws forced errors.

I have yet to watch a video of Osaka’s match.  I’m about to watch Arthur Fils in action in his first match back from rehab, after suffering a stress fracture in his back!?!🙄.  Apparently his back is still taped up, so hopefully it’s preventative measures.

Watched the video clip of Osaka vs Samsonova.  That’s the Osaka that I want to re-emerge in tennis.  Girl battled hard in that second set.  Down a break in the second.  Faced triple match point…..battling hard to win that game.  Went down in the tiebreak also.  Won the tiebreak.  Then won the 3rd set….lol.

Hope she can the win over Ostapenko.

Genie was cracking me up, she was leaning into those shots like her life depended on it.
If she hadn't been so distracted in her days, Genie would have collected a few grand slams. Instead she was more interested inn being the face of the WTA.

I hope that Kudermatova can hang in here, and win this match against Gauff, but her record against top players has not been the best.  She is up a set and a break.  However she is mentally weak, and Gauff is aware of that fact.

What is wrong with Gauff's service motion and the rest of the tour for not taking advantage of this more?  She's decelerating as she is hitting that serve and her racket is going way too far back like when you first learn how to serve.

I missed the second half of the second set.  I knew Kudermatova would blow that lead…lol.  Honestly, Gauff will never feel compelled to do anything about her serve, because she knows other players are not as mentally strong as her.

I just saw a write up (article), in a publication called “The Athletic.”  It may be an online publication.  This huge article expounded on Gauff’s DF, and how she still wins matches that she should lose….based on how high the count has been in the last several years.  Article was written after her match on Tuesday night.  Have to read again to really get the full gist of the article.

Abanda?  Fedex, please don’t insult Mboko.  Have you watched her play?  She started slow tonight, but once she got used to Bouzkova’s puff shots, she settled down, and literally got herself back into the match.  She just admitted that she was nervous in the beginning of the match.

I’m not about to make any declarations about Mboko’s potential, but she has all the tools so far.  Great serve, needs to shore up her first serve with a great second serve.  Great groundstrokes….easy power…as well as explosiveness on her shots.  Quick around the court.  Backhand slice when needed.   Needs more volleying skills, which will come in due course.  At 18 years old, she is doing ok as a new face on tour.

Tennis heads in Toronto are so thrilled to witness her rise, and they are so high on her potential.  Mboko with this win tonight is up to No 65 in the rankings.  She has been steadily beaten players in the top 50 in this tournament.  She is up against Gauff in the 4th round.  She played Gauff tough at RG, i think, or in a tournament earlier this year.

Miss Vee, I was looking back at very very old conversations here and saw how ruthless I was with my WTA assessments.  Looking back, I stand by it a million percent - only reason I've softened is not only age but that there are a few who have shown consistency like Iga, Aryna, and a certain extent Coco though honestly as a whole, the WTA is still God-awful.  Kessler is a lesser Lilia Osterloh, Meilin Tu, or Marissa Irvin.

Mirra, jury is still out but her lack of weapons is concerning.  She has to grind her way to points all the time.  May have a Kerber career at this rate.

I must say Fedex, that I agree with you.  That’s why I have to choose the matches that I watch.  Even with Rybakina, I become too frustrated with her play.  She is too slow footed most of the time in these big matches, and has to hit big all the time, with very little variation.  I mean she remains a player I like watching when she wins a match….lol.

Thanks Fedex.  Canada is going crazy about this girl.  I think Gauff was nervous about playing Victoria, because she seemed out of sorts.  Everyone is watching her progress.  She started the year ranked 352, playing on the ITA Challenger circuit.  Came into Miami on a 25 game winning streak or something like that….without losing a set.  Had 3 or 4 titles.  Impressed immensely at Miami, and then on the European clay courts, abd Wimby.  She is in now in the top 60.

Two top seeds are out of NBO.  This title is up for grabs.  Naomi, here is a chance to reach your first final of a big tournament, although given Iga’s performance today, if they had met in the SF, Naomi would have had a chance at the win.

Tauson who has lost to Iga earlier this year really served well, and her movement has improved a lot.

These girls are so weak minded.  They allow their opponents to see the stress in their faces when they facing adversity in a match.  Anisimova should not be allowing Svitolina to win this match.  Damn!!  lol.  Svitolina’s defence keeps her in many matches.

Lol these girls go insane when they face anyone who can defend.  It has been that way for eons.  The way a mentally focused Serena handled these girls is sorely missed.  But even players like Lindsay and Maria handled them with ease.  Imagine what peak Kim would be doing to someone like Anisimova.  Anisimova would easily look like the love child of Darwin's tortoise and Paul Bunyan trying to chop away lol.

Miss Vee this is literally Amanda whenever she has to move or plays a pusher/counterpuncher.  You're absolutely right about Naomi.  when she's playing well which she is, this type of tennis doesn't bother her because she has thought behind her groundstrokes and moves better than Anisimova.

Bianca, surely you remember Amanda Anisimova who first became noticed when she beat Petra Kvitova, then WTA No 2, at Indian Wells in straight sets.  I think Amanda was 15 or 16 years old at the time.  May have been 2017.
Anyway, she is American by way of Russian origin, and she was highly touted by the tennis world as the next big thing on the women’s side.  At 17 years old, she reached SF at French Open.  Then her Dad, and Coach died suddenly when she was 18 or 19 years old.  Sent her into a tailspin.  Results plummeted.  In 2023, she took about 9 months mental health leave from the tour….returned early in 2024 and has had great results in this past 8 months.

Don't forget Nike put a lot of money on her when she was 17 to replace Maria, unfortunately Amanda is lazy.

I wasn’t aware that Nike had bet on her to become the next Sharapova.  lol!  She is actually better than Sharapova in her game style, but as you say Sek, very lazy.  She admitted as much when she said during Wimbledon this year, that she doesn’t like fitness, but realizes that it’s very important.

Mboko is about to take the court to face Bouzas Maneiro.  Mboko is now a rock star in Canada.  Crowds are showing up to her practice sessions now.  Poor little rich girl to be!

Bouzas Maneiro is a very solid player, and just might have the tools to beat Mboko tonight.   She is very speedy with a ton of defence at her fingertips.

She is horrid Miss Vee.  Magui Serna was better.  These are the matches Mboko should be winning at this stage.  Not majors yet but Bouzas? lol yes

Is she Feddy?  Meaning Bouzas Maneiro.  She seems so hardy with good ground strokes.  Anyway, we shall see.  Apparently Mboko had said to her team early in the set, that her legs felt heavy.  She has been doing a lot of press in Mtl, because of this run she is on.  Maybe her parents and team, need to pull her back a little to manage her energy.  She hasn’t played at this top level so far into any WTA tournament until now.

Mboko is making a lot of mistakes tomight.  Maybe some nerves as she knows what she can achieve in this  tournament.

See what I mean about Bouzas Maneiro?  Great defence!

Victoria Mboko won the last 5 games after going down 0-2 in the second set.  I think she started the year on the ITF tour, winning 4 titles back to back, in straight sets.  Then had a break and win another title.  James Blake gave her a WC into Miami, based on her ITF record.  She hasn’t looked back.  She will be ranked at #47 in the live rankings, after starting the year ranked #333.

Sek and Miss Vee thanks for refresher on Amanda and yes there have been many Sharapova replacements over the years who never reached those heights ,Donna Vekic, Nicole Vaidisova come mind before much older men got their hands on them ……

Sek girl did you know Vavaranis still out there playing and slugging away… remember we used to always get behind her at the USO and it was always a let down… she was always start out fighting then everything would implode ……. I’m now looking to see if Alexandra Stevenson is still out there on somebody’s court trying to keep that dream alive…..she will always have 1999

Mboko played Rybakina so tough in Washington???  I think it was D.C.  Anyway, they played this summer or just before Wimbledon.  Rybakina was very impressed by her play.  That encounter should be a great one in 2 days.

Yes she did Bianca, and very easily as well.  Coco had played Mboko in Rome earlier this year, and Mboko took the first set.  I saw the match, and let me tell you girl, Mboko wasn’t that far away in that match.  She played Coco tough. It was Coco’s experience that got her the win.  Coco was very complimentary about Mboko’s game.

Here we are 3 months later, and Victoria won 2 days ago in str8s.  I like Coco a lot, her tennis game not so much.  However she wins matches.

This is insane hitting from Osaka in this qrtr final match against Svitolina.  She is up a double break. However, Svitolina is threatening to get one break back.

I wish I could say that I liked Osaka but I haven’t cared for her since she acted like an entitled brat not doing press conferences after a loss hiding behind the mental health excuse …. However glad she is back and doing well

lol Bianca!  Honestly, while I still believe she was going through it, I have since realized that Osaka wasn’t prepared well by her parents, how to be resilient when life threw her many curveballs.  She was very young, and although she was brought up in the U.S from the age of 3 years, she was programmed by Japanese and Haitian culture.

I’m from the Caribbean, and my kids were brought up with Caribbean sensibilities….not Canadian.  However, they have navigated the mix of cultures very well, based on their exposure and experiences.  Naomi and her sister kept to themselves.  It’s only recently, since her “breakdown “ and recovery, and becoming a mother, that she has gained more insights into her psyche, with some counseling.

Fedex, our assessment of Naomi vs Svitolina was spot on.  Dayum!  Love watching Osaka play great tennis.  She is so balanced today, on every front.  Maybe she could serve better, but forehand, backhand, angled shots….everywhere off the ground looks great.

I agree Miss Vee ..I’m of the belief that if you can shimmy shimmy into press confrence smiling ear to ear after beating Serena for a slam and accept the praise &  adulation that you receive from that …. You can also shimmy shimmy into that same room after a loss and face the press…. Girl you can’t just accept the praise and never be criticized while making millions honey I can’t even wrap my head around that. That child just isn’t my cup but I do wish her well

Bianca, I have also since realized, and I did say this in one of the threads, that Naomi comes across as being somewhat “dumb.”  Hate to say it, but her outbursts on social and in the press after several losses earlier in the summer especially when Mouratoglou was her coach, gave me the impression that this girl is dumb.  Fedex was having a fit of laughter when I posted it.

Anyway, I continue to enjoy watching her tennis when she is good.  I will always be a fan of her game. I can’t have it all.  Love Coco as a young woman, her tennis….not so much.

Bianca, you truly are out of the loop.  Caroline Garcia just was married a couple of weeks ago in France.  She also announced her retirement from tennis at the end of this season.  She now hosts a podcast with her husband.  She hasn’t played many tournaments this year.

Yes. These “kids” are now in their early 30s.  Caroline Garcia is 31 years old.  Genie Bouchard also 31.  Sloane is 32 years old.  Girl, you have missed their growing up years in tennis…lol!
Sloane is very busy with her work giving back to the community,  in fact, early in July received the Humanitarian ESPY award for her outstanding work.  Haven’t seen her much this year either on the tennis court.

Speaking of I need you to find Sabine ….FedEx I swear to you till this very day I giggle about that Wimbledon final vs Bartolli and the mad rush behind the scenes to get Sabines name off that rosewater dish before the match was over
