This year’s tournament has been decimated by withdrawals, most notably the top 2 male players and Djokovic.
Anyway, it remains a competitive field.  Tournament starts tomorrow.  Vasek Pospisil has announced his retirement.  His final match will be played in Toronto.  He received a WC, and will have a special ceremony in honour of his career.

Vasek Pospisil is ending his career this evening.  He has re-injured his left groin area in the first set.  Don’t really know why players choose to try playing when they haven’t been healthy for the better part of 2 years.  Feel badly for him.

Call him Pospisil the Lionheart!  This man doesn’t want to go out of the sport of tennis without really giving a thorough effort. He won the second set.

Just realized that Fonseca was playing today, and he lost his first round match to someone named Schoolkate from the UK.  Hmm…. I suppose he will be inconsistent for a while yet.

Bianca, since you have been gone, the tennis that we had been watching so fervently has definitely changed.  Top on the list is the ATP No 1 Jannik Sinner, and No 2 Carlos Alcaraz.  They both play high octane tennis, with drastically different styles.  Alcaraz has the flair and variety of shot. Sinner is like a Djokovic clone…only better….lol.

Other ATP players who offer good viewing are Jack Draper (UK),, Ben Shelton ( American), Holger Rune, Lorenzo Musetti, Arthur Fils.  My list is long…lol.
Other members have their faves also.

Toronto schedule is slightly more interesting today.
Rune vs GMP
Shapovalov vs Tien
Musetti vs Duckworth
Zverev vs Walton
Medvedev vs
Ruud vs Safiuillin
Moutet vs Brooksby ( the latter is in for a world of hurt with Moutet’s nonsense)

Tbh Bianca, I’m not as fond of Ben as when he first joined to the tour.  As Fed has said, he has this clown energy about him.  However, he draws crowds. If you want American players, Fritz has been making some noise, and is now a fixture in the top 10.  Don’t like his tennis,  it seems like a nice dude.  Tiafoe is a clown,  but can light it up at times on court in the majors also.  However he fails to be effective at the business end of GS.

As usual, I cannot watch Denis play Live, or if I do, he has to be on a roll in a tournament.  He is so inconsistent, but absolutely beautiful shotmaking.  He was up a break, and serving for the first set.  Still don’t know what happened, because I had stepped away from the screen.  Learner Tien took the first set in a tiebreak.

Any player who is steadier than Shapovalov will beat him, especially if they have promise as an up and comer.  Denis served for both sets, and lost both in tiebreakers.

I’m reading somewhere that FAA is in the middle of wedding planning.  So is Shapovalov.  All of these young guys age 24/25/26 are getting hitched in their mid twenties.  Hope that they are blessed with good partners.  Most of them have admitted that it’s kind of lonely being on tour.  They have seen Federer do the same, and kept playing even after having kids.
ADF was married a few weeks before Wimby I think, or shortly afterwards.
Ruud is also engaged.

Miss Vee, was just gonna say that with Muchova.  She does better against Keys, sabalenka type players than backboards like Gauff.  Muchova I felt would've beaten Sab in 3 had she not choked against weaponless Pegula last year at the USO

I had read somewhere that Gauff is now attempting to fix the DF issue.  I keep wondering if Gauff has missed a few steps in her development.  Mind you, teenagers have always entered the main tour early, around 16-17 years old these days.  Back in the 80s and 90s, they were pros at 14-16 years old.
It’s not often these days that I can say I enjoyed watching Coco play tennis, and that’s a shame,  ecause I do root for her.  Gauff has settled into the notion that it’s okay if she wins ugly.

I’m hearing that all of the singles matches from here on, in both Toronto and Montreal are going to be played as evening matches.  This isn’t right.  Can you imagine the men’s matches being played after midnight?  It’s all for financial gain for both tours.  Then they leave Canada after the final is played around 7 pm in both cities, and have to get ready for Cincy.  This is outrageous.  No wonder the players are so upset and disgusted with this 12 day format.  They are finally realizing the impact of what has been decided by Andrea Gaudenzi (ATP),and Simon (WTA).

Listen, I would rather he have a winners mentality than the  James Blake mentality of oh I don’t wanna offend anybody. I just wanna be one of the guys and go along to get along. Or the Monfils cut the monkey for the white folks mind set We hard enough of that over the years. Nick was doing bs just to mess with others Ben is only giving it back if you cross him big difference.

I have no problem with a winner mentality Bianca.  Guess what, there is a reason that Roger Federer and his group of investors have Ben have him on their roster of players.  I liked Ben when he first appeared on the tour at least for a whole 18 months or more.  Followed his progress ardently.  I was the one advising the rest of this board to pay attention to him, when they weren’t sold on him.  Then everything changed as I watched him continue to always celebrating his opponent’s mistakes etc.  Have no problem with him pumping himself up.  That’s what most players do now.  Overtime, I became turned off because I saw that he needed to develop his game more.  He has done well, but I’m not in his corner at this point.

However, I reserve the right to change my mind again….😂

I’m aware that this is a new trial for the Canadian Open, and Cincinnati tournaments.  However this 12 day format sucks for players and fans, IMO.  Having the qrts, semis, being played every other day at night session is the worst.  GS are a different animal.  Players appreciate the day off between, especially the men with the 5 set format.  Me don’t like this ting!  lol!

This isn’t a great match. Mboko is somewhat injured, and cannot serve well. Osaka is imploding mentally against a newbie, who can match her power and ground strokes.  Problem is, Mboko is made of sterner stuff, that Osaka doesn’t possess.

Naomi Osaka has lost me as a fan.  She stood up there and did not congratulate her opponent on the win.  I hope that Mboko took note of that insult.  Get Naomi out of there,  I hope she retires with this beating from Mboko.  What a nasty person!!  I hope Witkorowski resigns from her team.

Fedex, you have to know that her serve was affected by that taped wrist.  Apparently she told her box, that she couldn’t use her kick serve, because of the lack of effective pronation of that wrist.  However, she has to fix that serve also.

Bianca, you and everyone on this board are so right about Naomi!  What a disgruntled b**ch!!  I’m so over her.  I thought that she had found more strength in this tournament…more guts!  Granted, the crowd was lifting Mboko, and that’s to be expected.  However, she has been on tour long enough to know how to handle these situations.  It’s tough, but you have to buckle down, and refuse to lose.  Nah, Osaka is a wimp.  Rybakina was all class about the situation yesterday.   I had been sitting on the fence for awhile.  Her actions while speaking at the championship ceremony was totally tasteless.

So happy that Mboko won her first title, and it’s a big one,  congratulations to her and her family.

Guys, yesterday was a busy day for me,  I watched a bit of the matches.
So happy for Mboko and Ben.
Mboko needs to work on her serve, and net game. Something about the way she moves reminds me of Sloane.
I hope she stays healthy, we do not need another Andreescu.
Now, Ben. This guy is hungry, he is giving everything out there, and let me tell you, Ben is not laying down for nobody.
He still needs to find a way to beat Alcaraz and Sinner.
I have to say I was surprised at the way Naomi acted once Mboko started challenging her.

We missed your prescience yesterday Sek.   Canada is over the moon with this win by Mboko.  You know, she was born in the USA.  Her parents escaped DRC years ago with their kids as refugees, but Victoria was born in North Carolina.  The family then immigrated to Canada.  So in their minds, Canada has formed Victoria.  On the topic of injuries, apparently that is what has held Victoria back in the past 18 months or so.  Now she’s here, and rocketing up the rankings.  Today she is WTA #25, and is seeded at the USO.

Anyway, I’m over Osaka after her snub to Victoria.  My allegiance is with all Canadians, and  some Americans also.

"true bone fide Bitch"??    Really?!?

All because she did not congratulate Mboko during the trophy ceremony.???  Really?!?!

It's not like Osaka said something like, "Iga Świątek would have won if she had reached the final."  (I don't recall you are anyone else on this board calling Sabalenka a "true bone fide bitch").

Not chance that Osaka was "overwhelmed by emotions", upset that she loss, and simply forgot, huh?
I guess she said nothing at the net to Mboko at the net for the hand shake either.

So Osaka forgetting to congratulating Mboko during the ceremony is worse than something like Townsend, when you openly cheated during a match when an out ball hit her request?   Hmmm.  No one here called Townsend a bitch.  Go figure.

STAR, you are trying way too hard. No one watches Townsend here. She is a journey woman. Wasted talent, case closed.  I am the only one who once in a while peeks in at her double's matches.

Wait a min Sek we were very much in to Taylor when she first hit the scene all of those juniors were making noise Bencic, Konju, Tornado Black lol….we all defended her they were trying to to shame her about her weight. Why are you talking about Taylor like that and calling her a journeywoman? lol  oh boy you have me laughing this morning

Remember Bianca, Bencic ran Taylor out of juniors lol. None of those girls made any noise as far as majors go.  Ostapenko was part of that crew, never got mentioned, but is the only one with a slam lol.

FedEx, you are right Ostapenko did win a slam good for her , Bencic came on tour with a bang she picked up big wins out of the gate with  her Hingis-esque game , she could still sneak a slam considering she is still going deep at slams. Konjuh surprised me cause they swore she was the 2nd coming of Serena down to the physique we expected more. Townsend was a bust right out of the gate her gane didn’t transition well to the main tour. I recall it was a struggle to pick up wins and she never took off as we had hoped. Tornado Black parents set her up for failure with the name , she was a backboard sadly she got injured and had to retire, she never had a real chance to get her backboard going on tour ….ahhh the good ol’ days of the super juniors.

They did more than that.  The USTA basically sabotaged her career.  Patrick Mac and co, pressured the USOpen  (and probably other major US tournaments) to deny her wildcards during that time.

Yet it was just last year, when there was a conversation on this board about how Townsend cheated (when she denied that a ball hit her racquet.

The point: being no one called her a bonified bitch then.

And ofcourse there are many other incidents with tennis players who may have displayed questionable character, and the selective outrage by some on this board (Read: The banning of Halep/Errani vs Sinner/Swiatek)

Star, nobody called Townsend a bone fide bitch.  I was referring to Osaka in my post.  Townsend was never a bitch.  Or are you referring now to Ostapenko?!?  I suppose I’m confused here…lol.  Doesn’t take much to confuse me.😂

Exactly!

Plenty of players with more questionable behavior, and I don't recall any of them being called a bonified bitch, until Osaka's misstep (not counting the espn board days).

Bona fide bitch…. Star we were talking about Naomi after how she acted in the match vs Victoria….as far as Townsend I just recall us all being supportive and Taylor never having that breakout moment on tour or making a significant rise

I guess, I missed it (as I did not see the actual match).  Osaka did not offer congratulations to Mboko when speaking after receiving the runners-up trophy (or as Sek calls it, "The Loser's trophy").
Yes, that is a major faux pas.  Reeks of poor sportsmanship.

To me, looking at the pictures that I saw, it looked as if Naomi just wanted to get out of there, lost in her own emotions over losing.  To me, it did not see intentional (and she basically said such in the interview that I had linked).

I can see people who never liked Osaka, would just consider it as another reason as to why they don't like her.  But it sort of baffles me as to why it would cause someone who previously liked Osaka, to now stop liking her.

The other example/comparison that I made was with Sabalenka's speech when she lost the FO title to Gauff.  I don't recall anyone here calling Sabalenka a bitch (certainly not a Bonified Bitch). I also did not hear anyone say that they would never root for Sabalenka again.

Star, I said that I’m not rooting for Sabalenka over the way she responded to Gauff’s win.  Cannot remember if I said it here however.
Re: Osaka, it has been a long journey in decoupling from her in my fondness for watching her in action, and wanting her to regain her status at the elite level.  I still would like her to do well, but I’m fatigued from watching her mood swings, and listening to her sadness in post match interviews.  She is not a balanced individual.  She is up and happy with wins. Losses are devastating for her on this comeback trail.  She compares herself to Belinda Bencic, marveling at her results post maternity leave. That is her primary mistake.  Her journey is different from Bencic.  Osaka was in bad shape when she returned to the tour January 2024.  Belinda was fit.

One thing that I need to emphasize here Star, is that I’m a retired R.N, and did work in mental health post retirement for about 5 years on a casual basis.  I recognize the need for those that need help, accessing it and maintaining it on a consistent basis.  Osaka did access the help eventually.  Not sure if she has maintained it, because her profound sadness after many losses…some of which she should have won, have seared her soul.  She is deeply impacted.  It’s akin to her being traumatized by these losses.  It’s very visible in her post match interviews.  I cannot stand to watch her sadness personally on an ongoing basis.  I’m now exhausted by her.   In all honesty, I’m doing this for myself…not against her really…lol.

The last straw was her behaviour during that the final in Mtl, where she forgot?!?  to congratulate Mboko.  As I have had time to dissect her behaviour, I’m actually more alarmed for her, by that admission.  That suggests that her mind is so fragile, she was totally scattered in thought process.   IMO, unless she starts winning big titles, or even a 250 level title, she will be DONE psychologically.  Her tennis is great at the moment.  She’s actually back, but it’s her fragile mind which is her downfall. We have seen that the game of tennis is more mental….and Osaka is profoundly lacking in self belief, and self esteem.

Star, I just read on FB, that Naomi Osaka has proclaimed she is never returning to play tennis in Canada, because she felt disrespected in that final. She is taking a page out of the WS playbook.  I  wasn’t aware that the crowd was booing her DF etc.   I don’t condone it, but I know they wanted Mboko to win the match.   Previously I would have cared about that behaviour.  Other players go through that stuff, which isn’t nice, or the behaviour should be stopped by umpires.  The mentally strong will survive that behaviour and thrive from it.  Her complaints don’t matter to me any longer.  Problem is hers, and she must find a way to deal, or leave the sport.

She is so exhausting.  They were cheering for the home town girl.  Deal with it.  Bianca said it a long time ago.  IW, being booed by your own home crowd at a major in USO, cheering for opponents simply because they were white, allegations of match fixing, etc.  Yet the sisters faced the press.

Interesting.  Thanks, I had not even read anything about the match until now.
(The linked article states that Niomi acknowledged her mistake of not congratulating Mboko after the match in press release provide by the WTA in lue of a press conference.  The article also notes Mboko reaction to Osaka not congratulating her on her win)

Miss Vee continues: "Other players go through that stuff, which isn’t nice, or the behaviour should be stopped by umpires"

Yes, I've seen that type of crowd behavior in other matches as well (along with players who fist pump over their opponents obvious UFEs).  Seems like that part of tennis etiquette is dead.

Miss Vee final:  "Her complaints don’t matter to me any longer"

Because she is a bonified Bitch, right?

lol Star, it’s not because she is a bone fide bitch….😂.  It’s because I really can’t afford  to care anymore.  It’s exhausting to hear and see her deep depressive state after her losses.  Then the following day, her mood has suddenly shifted into an  awareness, and her mood lightened with the most amazing quotation that has taught her something.  Nothing meaningful happens in such short period of time. My preference is to watch people be proactive re: their struggles.  Not blame situations, or others. Nah Star, it’s my disappointment in watching her stay stuck for this length of time.  If she had been making progress, she would  have handled that situation differently.  She seems to have found her game again, and I wish her luck.  She will win a few tournaments , but will continue to struggle when she loses, but I will no longer be affected by it.  I’m choosing a different path away from Osaka.

Osaka is on my shit list along with Heather Watson …. I haven’t forgotten that Center Court match with the way she played her ass should have taken over the tour nabbed double digit slams and the #1ranking.

Bianca lol remember Christina McHale always did the same bs. Barely won tour matches yet put Serena on the other side, she was hitting backhand winners on the run while performing a triple axel on a balance beam.

FedEx I agree but Heather was out of pocket she peaked at #38for a cup of coffee and had the nerve to turn into a world beater on Center Court no no no ….why didn’t she back it up after … she never had deep run to a 2nd week of a slam or anything … that girl really pissed me off
