Janice Tjen has a Stosur/Barty serve.  Very tough kick on the 2nd and then a nice flat one up the T.

And the more I see her, the more she plays like Sam and Ash.  BH a clear liability but massive serve and forehand.  Barty was at least able to neutralize a lot with the slice and it became a weapon at times.  From what I can gather Tjen can't hit the slice as effectively.  She runs all the way to the Milky Way to avoid that bh if possible and hit a fh.

Fed and sugar, I just tuned in to see that Leylah is in deep do-do🙄.  I don’t know much about Tjen , except she had gone on an impressive ITF run at some point maybe summer of last year.  I think she may have done well at Wimbledon.  Just remember glimpses of her play.  She is fun to watch, abd I think she can beat Leylah tonight.  Poor Leylah, she has had a very rough start to the season, losing first round in Auckland?  again in Brisbane.

Just looked up Janice Tjen.  She is the same age as Fernandez….23 years old, from Indonesia, so she is now an up and comer. Currently ranked at #59.

Leylah should not be having so much trouble, because Iva Jovic, an 18 year old American who shows amazing promise just demolished Tjen in Auckland a couple of weeks ago. Hope Leylah can turn this match around.  Tough playing someone who plays with so much variety

Oh man!  Tjen has such a great serve, and that is what got her out of trouble plus her bravery in going for her shots.  C’mon Leylah….get back that break of serve.

I may be wrong about Mboko’s right knee, because she is also in the doubles draw, teamed up with your young American teen…Iva Jovic, who was also a finalist in Auckland last weekend.

What’s going on with Maddie Keys??  She has barely won a match this year in Australia.  Wow!  Have never seen this girl before.

Keys is righting the ship.  She just doesn't have the hunger after winning her first major.  I thought she would be pregnant by now and call it quits.

I hear that Fedex.  C’mon Maddie!
I think Fernandez is fighting hard to take her match to the 3rd set.

Miss Vee, I think this is who Leylah is.  I had some hope for her last season given she showed glimpses of 2021 but she's top 20-30 at best and will not be a consistent threat.

I know Fed!  I have concluded that also.  Vicky has really highlighted the difference between a potential GS champ for Canada, and also ran.  Always knew that Leylah might pose a threat occasionally in WTA tournaments, but not at GS level.

Keys really gutted out that first set win.  Keep it going now Maddie.
Musetti lost the first set, and for some reason I feel as if he must win this second set to stay alive in this match.

Fed, I like Musetti, and yes, it’s disappointing that the current ATP top 10 isn’t as strong as we would like them to be at this moment.  However, I can see that younger players like Fils, Draper, Mensik are pushing themselves to be an ingest the elite, and become injured quite often.  The established guys like Zverev, Medvedev and Rublev have fallen off quite a lot, so there has been a total shift in what the top 10 guys look like right now.  I have the feeling that the players ranked between 5-10, will keep sliding up and down.  Felix may be out of the top 10 after Aussie.  However, I’m patient.  I may only follow Sinner and Alcaraz and Shapo consistently at the moment.
Btw, I have read or heard somewhere that Fonseca might be carrying a back injury.  Let’s see how he performs tonight.

Sloane Stephens is being ushered out of AO, after reaching the main draw.  Ka Pliskova or Avatar to Fedex, will move on to the second round.  I never knew what injury had made Sloane step away from tennis for more than a year.  She is now 32 years old.  Can’t believe that I have watched her since she was 16-17 years old coming on to the tour.

Rybakina beat Juvan in str8s.. 6-4, 6-2 and is through to the second round.
Mboko won her doubles with Jovic.   Pleased to see these young girls trying to improve their singles games.

Sugar, I too am concerned about Vicky’s decision to play doubles at this tournament.  Why risk an injury?  Do these people not realize that they try to push their bodies too much?  Any discomfort this early in the season has to be handled with some smarts.  Ease off, and help your body restore itself.  Hope that they lose their next doubles match.

sugar, have you seen what Osaka wore when she stepped out on court last night?  I’m watching video clips of her walk on court outfit!  Whaaat?  I’m sorry,  this is nonsense!  Girl, you are here to play tennis….not to make this a fashion catwalk show.  This ludicrous.  She has completely lost the plot.  I hate to say this, but Naomi will not lift another GS trophy.

Before this year has ended, Naomi Osaka will hang up her racquet.  She can no longer compete with the likes of Sabalenka who keeps improving on her skills, Swiatek especially on clay now.  She can get Gauff still. Rybakina will beat her, Andreeva will eat her alive with her variety.  Mboko is improving daily also.  Anisimova will beat her also.  This girl is “has been”at this point.

OK, I won't call you guys haters here.   But still note that you guys seem to greatly enjoy bashing Naomi Osaka.

I did not see her match, but from the pics that I've seen, that outfit is comical.

I don’t hate Osaka Star, I’m embarrassed for her.  I would have preferred if she let her tennis do the talking.  If she were winning tournaments, or being competitive the weeks in which she plays tennis, I would think it’s endearing…just as we did with Serena.  However, she hasn’t done nearly as well as Bencic, who is now back in the top 10.  Naomi might make it there this year.  However I have the feeling that she is watching these youngsters who are now playing at a higher level, and have more variety also.  I have the sense she’s more intimidated than before she became a mother.
It seems to me, that she wants to ensure that she remains part of the conversation.  This is my interpretation of Naomi’s actions.  It should be all about the competition IMO.  I’m a bit disappointed.

Star, I happened to catch the last set this morning live.  I didn’t see her walk out on court, but the commentators had mentioned that Osaka had better win this match, because her “walk on” outfit would be seen as a mistake, or something akin to that word.
So when I saw the outfit later, I had to pick my lower jaw off the floor.  It was TOO MUCH!!!
I think I could see that working in a different setting.  Not on a tennis court, especially a Major tournament.  It’s as if she’s not a serious person…a true contender.  She has gone way overboard.  I have previously enjoyed her play with fashion.  Today, it was a joke!!
Btw, she was awesome in the last 3 games in the third set, because she could have easily lost that match in the 3rd.
