This tournament started the same day the Canadian Open finished.  That’s crazy.
It’s heating up starting today in Cincy, with the stars scheduled to play.

Swiatek vs Potapova
Sinner vs Galan
Sabalenka vs Vondrousova
Fritz vs Nava
Ruud vs Rinderknech
Fernandez vs Bouzas Maneiro
Keys vs Lys

Thanks for the update Miss_Vee. This year, the Canada Open completely over-shadowed Cincy. It feels like we just got out of a GS and we need time off.
Lineup looks good. Will try to catch some of the matches.

You’re welcome. Isn’t that the truth about the Canadian Open.  Great tournament, even if I don’t like the format.
Btw, I will miss most of the action today.  Have my granddaughters for the weekend.

Lol Bianca!! Cilic really maximized his talent especially considering all the injuries he had too.  He came back and randomly beat Tiafoe last year I think in Canada and then disappeared with another injury.  Cilic was more well-rounded and was equally dangerous off both the fh and bh whereas Raonic had a horrendous bh.

Bianca, I agree with fedix, Marin actually had a nice game. Milo’s was very stiffed in my opinion, big serve , decent forehand .seems like a nice person but me personally never saw anything special about his game.

Milos Raonic is a very nice guy, and a tennis player who would be consistent after his rise.  Not a great athlete however, and was hampered by injuries which derailed his career.  Hasn’t played in about 3 or 4 years now.  Hasn’t officially retired yet. Tried returning at Wimbledon 2024 unsuccessfully.  He is now 34 years old.

Cilic still hits a very good ball. Remember how he gave a whooping to home boy Draper at Wimbledon.
I agree with Fedex, Raonic completely maximized his talent. Even without injuries, his body structures did not allow him to add any more finesse to his game.

Coco continues to struggle with DF that costs her games, but usually prevails against lower seeded opponents, even some higher seeded opponents.  She just coughed up 3 DF to give the break back in the first set.  Old story.

Navarro is struggling a lot this year.  Maybe she has fallen out of top 10 at this point, which is not a surprise.

I’m aware that Sabalenka is WTA No 1, but her tennis isn’t aesthetically pleasing to the eye.  I will stop nick picking now.😂
Anyway Emma is ready giving Aryna a run for her money in this third set. On serve 4-3, with Raducanu to serve.

Just saw a video clip of Vicki Mboko being celebrated on one of our local stations in Toronto for winning NBO.  The entire country is so proud of her.  You bet that everyone in Canada will have eyes on her during the USO.  She also admitted on that interview that the USO is the GS title she covets most.

Not a happy camper at the moment.  Denis keeps breaking my heart.  I don’t know how to be half in, half out with tennis players,  I’m usually all in.  That’s my personality.  I’m going to stick with Fernandez, BB Andreescu, and Victoria Mboko ( with some caution on the latter pick.  Hasn’t proven anything yet.)

So many players retiring injured from matches here in Cincy.  USO is around the corner.  What an abysmal tournament in Cincinnati.   Khachanov just retired in his match against Zverev. Tiafoe retired earlier today against Rune.  A few more retired yesterday.

You will come across the same type of comments in threads about other sports, (especially when talking about NFL and NBA.).
Many ignore that base truth. That is that athletes today are stronger, faster, heavier and train harder than athletes did 30 years ago.  And this puts a much greater stain on their bodies.

As far as the mental part, well social media seems to rot everyone's brain.

Sugar, are you referring to my statement about players retiring from Cincy?  Or to mental health struggles by Osaka, and other tennis players?
If you are referring to the players retirement in matches in Cincy, I’m not surprised one bit.  Extending Masters tournament to 12 days, and having Cincinnati starting the last day of Canada tournaments, is madness.  The brutal heat players have been subjected to from D.C to Canada to Cincy have taken a tremendous toll on these athletes who have gone deep in all of them.  Even for some who lost early, who may have nursing some minor injuries, and don’t want to risk then worsening before USO, is understandable.

Sugar, I disagree with you.  The tour is too rigorous now.  We watched Roger especially carefully manage his schedule in order to avoid injury. Nadal was always nursing an injury and didn’t really have to complain about it. Roger and the top guys took time off after GS tournaments, so they did not succumb to serious injury.  They still had some niggling stuff when they were playing.  I have been noticing the changes mounting year after year, and not in favour of players.  I can remember Andy Murray before he was injured calling for changes which allowed players more time to rest between tournaments.  In absence of that, they need a longer break at the season end.  Roddick and numerous others called for the same thing  Don’t forget….I'm a retired person…lol.  Have lots of time

Miss_Vee

I was listening to Andy Roddick’s podcast after Wimbledon in which he and Chris Eubanks were discussing the changes in the men’s game.  The physicality is off the charts, the guys are hitting the ball harder than ever before and keeping it between the lines.  They also mentioned the upswing in injuries, because these players are coming out of their shoes when they hit the tennis ball.

It’s taking a huge toll on these players.  There have always been injuries, but this spring/summer many of the top guys, excluding Sinner and Alcaraz have been injured.  Fils, Draper, Ruud and others.  All top players have their own physios to take care of their bodies ….yet, they have become injured, and need several weeks to recover.  It’s not as simple as “these players are too soft.”  That goes for the WTA also.

Fedex and Bianca, that picture of the stats you posted, is now the reason I cannot watch Gauff’s matches anymore.  I mean, I’m forced to when she gets to quarters, semis and finals.  During RG final, I couldn’t watch in the 3rd set.  Gauff survived that final, because she was mentally stronger than Sabalenka.  Neither player showed good play because the conditions.  The messy final was one of the worst that I had ever seen in these many years.  What is worse also, is that Gauff has become comfortable, or so it seems, with winning ugly.

having said that, given how sensitive these doping tests are now, it is possible that minute, negligible amounts of contamination is possible and can cause false positive results.  Maybe I should not be as hard on Halep then but her case was a very specific drug which showed up, not a metabolite lol
