I currently only do small races and do not use a chip system, but we record bib numbers as they cross the finish.

In these times of COVID has anyone without Chip Timing devised a way to do wave starts?

I have a couple of ideas on it but have not yet tried anything yet. I have a race coming up soon and it would be good to see what other timers may be doing.

You could have arranged start times like every 5 minutes, and have them register for their start time in RSU using the corral feature (could be done manually too, but RSU makes life easy).  Limit each wave to whatever number you are comfortable starting at a time. Then just start them on time for that wave, (enter their wave time as appropriate in RD) and when they finish, you would just enter your finish time like you are now, RD will take out the appropriate wave time from their total time.

The key with wave starts when not  using chip timing (start mat) is that you NEED to know who is starting in each wave.
You assign them a wave group. Very recently in RD, Roger added the feature to assign a gun time to each wave by the press of a button  instead of manually collecting their start time and entering it into that wave group. If you have wave groups defined, on the "Set Time" button (use to be the "Gun Time" button), you can now have the wave group picked and when the gun goes off for that wave, it now assigns the time for that wave.
If a person shows up for the wrong wave, you go in and edit their info and put them into the actual wave they started in.
