I floated the idea of a panel discussion about Perl and scientific programming at YAPC::NA 2014.

I thought that I would chair it and see if jberger, run4flat, and waltman would be on the panel.

Joel is doing the keynote at YAPC::Brazil on Science and Perl so I hope it wouldn't be too much arm twisting to get him there.

Dave has done lots of good work with Prima and PDL.

Walt gave a talk at this year's Pittsburgh Perl Workshop on numpy/scipy as well stuff for his PhD (mostly using Perl as glue IIRC).

I think maybe one more person would help but I think 3-4 folks besides myself (really doing sysadmin work but I want to show that Perl is a viable option for scientific programming).

Any thoughts before I support this talk idea?

Thanks,

gizmo

I'm pretty sure I'll be up for it. I'm actually not sure where I'll be at that time---In the next couple of days I'll send off some applications for professorships that begin next fall. However, it is quite likely that I will be available at that time, and I'd love to be involved in a panel. I'm sure I'll also give a talk while I'm at it, but that will be figured out sooner to the conference. :-)

Indeed I think that's a great idea. As long as I'm able to attend, I would be happy to participate!

Howdy,

This sounds great! I am up for being on the panel if you need more people.

Ok, I have *finally* whipped up a draft talk proposal.

Give me your critique of it and what I might be able to add or revise.

Also, if you have any ideas for additions to the pool of panel members I would welcome them. The more diverse I can make the panel the better I think.

I have had some luck in getting some introductions to Maggie Xiong (PDL-Stats maintainer) and possibly Adam Kennedy (too many modules to jot down).

Without further ado, here's my draft:

Perl and scientific program: A panel discussion

Estimated talk length: 50 minutes

Panel Chair: Joe Kline

Panel members: current pool
   Joel Berger - Keynote Speaker YAPC::Brazil 2013
David Mertens - PDL contributor, Visiting Assistant Professor at Dickinson College
Jay Hannah - Lapsed BioPerl user
Johnath Leto - Founder, Leto Labs, LLC
(need to check availability) Maggie J. Xiong - PDL-Stats maintainer,  Shutterstock
(need to check availability) Adam Kennedy - profilic CPAN contributor,

A brief introduction of panel members followed by some  topics (see following), with some free form questions and answers with the audience.

Panel topics:
Members will discuss their use of Perl in their scientific endeavors. How it was used in the past and how it might be used in the future.

Also, how one might leverage Perl's strengths and mitigate its weakness in scientific programming.

I’m honored to be on the list, and I love to talk about BioPerl and scientific computing. But fair warning: I am also a DEEPLY lapsed BioPerl abuser (though I do still man irc.freenode.net #bioperl), so if you have any active science types, those folks might make more interesting panelists. :)

I was only science (BioPerl) active for ~4 years, part time:

I still get really excited talking about scientific computing because it’s the coolest stuff ever. But, turns out, not for me as a profession. So far. I’m pushing 40 and still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. :)

Regardless, I look forward to sciencey stuff at YAPC this year! Let’s hackathon on BioPerl or whatever! Woot!! :D

Well my submission for a panel discussion on Perl and Scientific Programming has been accepted.

So, I'll like to sort firming up folks that we be able to be on the panel.

I hope Joel and Dave are rather solid Yes's.

dukeleto had to bail.

I was hoping to have Maggie Xiong on the panel but she won't be able to make it.

I need to ping adamk againg.

Anyone else have thoughts on how might be good to have on the panel?

I have jhannah, genehack, and waltman on the short list as well. I figured I would cast a wide net now and see whom I can get.

Also, I'll be working up some prepared questions for the panel. I'll try to ask maybe 4 questions of the panel before I open to Q&A from the audience. I will shoot to have maybe 10 prepared questions just in case we don't get many from the crowd.

Thanks,

gizmo

Hey gizmo,

In case you haven't noticed, I've been buried under a rock (well, teaching actually) since late January during which I haven't read any of my Perl email. I am now coming back, only to realize that I'm attending a different conference at the exact same time as YAPC::NA, so I can't be on the panel. I hate to back out, especially with so little time to round up any others, but that is the way of it, unfortunately. I'm really, really sorry. :-(

If it's any consolation, I do have a cool project coming down the pipeline...

Dang, and after reading about this:

 https://developer.nvidia.com/jetson-tk1

It sparked a question that I was going to ask and knew you had some familiarity with:

"Parallel computing is becoming more and more important. Have you used any parallel computing with Perl? What options do you know of and use or recommend?"

I know you've done come CUDA work. Now I won't get your answer...although maybe I can still ask it, have you give me a written response and I can read it/put it on a slide.
