Can anyone assist in identifying this “sparrow”?
Thanks

The two bands on the chick's one leg seem to have identical codes. Any ideas why they'd double up?

You can also see in Angelique's photo they grow into them more or less. Judging from a fledgling they can look quite large but the older they get the smaller on the bird they become in comparison to the length of their legs. And as mentioned by Chris they design these tags to be lightweight, just like a normal band on a passerine.

They are really light. The size is a tradeoff for being able to read them without having to recapture and stress the bird.

It seems like large bands...is that really necessary?

Here's a photo of a young one that was banded when I was on Nottawasega Island in 2016 (helping catch the birds for the banders). I felt this one was too small (it was much smaller than the others being banded) but it sure wasn't my call. Before this they used to put blue tags on the wings. Maybe some of you have also seen those. We've had some pass through Valley Inn in the past.

Yes, bands. Every now and then you'll see one down there with wing tags too.
Pretty sure they are banded as chicks as their legs don't increase in diameter from when they are young.

It was at Valley Inn on Spring Gardens Road with 3 other egrets today... although I didn’t see bands on the others.

Sure looks like leg bands to me. I know Chip Weseloh, (an acquaintance of a lot of Hamilton birders) is a biologist who has been studying Great Egret breeding colonies; perhaps they're being banded.

Hiya Pipits,
Can someone confirm/verify that this giant bird has bands on its legs? Would the ornithological set do that to an adult bird, how would they catch it?
If, those are, indeed, bands? Awesome.
Apologies, pics not outstanding but u get the idea.
Thx

Thanks Cody,
The breast dot /brown marking seemed to me to be more lateral than central – and the sparrow was not singing (I guess you can’t sing with your mouth full!)
- good to have your confirmation – many thanks
