Subject: Grimsby Wetlands HNC e-Newsletter December 2025

Hello

We know we sent you a newsletter very recently but we wanted to touch base with you again to let you know about some upcoming events being put on by the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club.

Please view the Club’s newsletter below. We apologize if the script is kind of large and you may have to use the bar at the bottom of your screen to see the whole page size of the newsletter

.

The events published for December, tomorrow nights General Meeting will be a presentation on  “Drawn from Nature – Women Artists and Botanical Works” and on Dec. 15 at the Bird Study Group the topic is “Nuts and Moults”.

Each month the Club has a speaker at the General Club meeting and at the monthly Bird Study Group meeting. All are welcome.

On January 12, Bruce will be giving a presentation on the Grimsby Wetlands. This will be the first time that he will be presenting this talk to the Club. Bruce will be outlining all of the pieces that have led to the success of the Grimsby Wetlands. We hope to see you there.

We have spoken to you before about the benefits of joining the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club.  If it were not for the Club there would be no Grimsby Wetlands. Please consider joining if you not already a member.

All meetings take place at the First Unitarian Church, 170 Dundurn St South, Hamilton, meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.

By joining the Club you help to support the Club and all of its projects in a big way. Further information is on the website. hamiltonnature.org

On your next visit to the Wetlands you may notice a number of areas that have been mowed. These areas were primarily covered in Phragmites grass and Reed Canary grass. These non-native grasses have been cut down to open the areas up so that other plants might have a better chance of growing. See attached photo. We also wanted to clear a lot of the dead stems to make it easier to find Wild Parsnip in some sections in May for spraying.

With the cut stems on the wet ground for the winter they will decompose faster than if they were left standing.

With this continuous cold weather we hope to be on the ice soon when it is safe to get at our winter maintenance of nesting structures;

Mallard nesting tubes, goose nesting platforms, Tree Swallow nest boxes and perches.

The bird feeders will be going up this week. Please let us know if you could donate to our bird seed costs or to other projects at the Grimsby Wetlands. All donations to the Grimsby Wetlands account of the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club are tax deductible. To those who have helped in the past, Thank you.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Wishing you well and Happy Holidays,

Thanks for your support,

Bruce and Laurie Mackenzie

Hamilton Harbour Deep Dive Webinar

Join the Hamilton Harbour Remedial Action Plan for a free webinar on Thursday, December 4 at 5:30 PM for an inside look at how our communities manage wastewater, and discover what really happens after you flush.

As part of the Clean Harbour Program, the City of Hamilton has completed significant upgrades to the Woodward Wastewater Treatment Plant. The addition of a new filtration stage to the final treatment process marks a major step in improving the health of Hamilton Harbour. This webinar will also feature insights from Halton Region staff about how water is processed at the Skyway Treatment Plant in Burlington.

Consolidation Proposed for Conservation Authorities

The provincial government has proposed the amalgamation of Ontario's 36 conservation authorities into seven regional conservation authorities overseen by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks. Conservation authorities were established to protect people and the environment, addressing local needs with local expertise. The proposed amalgamation would remove decision-making power from local experts, creating a disconnect between decision-makers and the communities they serve. These sprawling regional conservation authorities would try to apply a one-size-fits-all approach to dozens of municipalities and watersheds with local needs and unique environments.
