Hello Pipits!
Im just returning from my trip to northern BC and Yukon.
While I was at Rondeau with a few of you, we ran into an young ornithologist named Benjamin Sonnenberg. He is doing post doctoral research at Western. I was surprised to learn they have an avian research facility!
If you search for Advanced Facility for Avian Research on maps you should find it.
I am putting together a trip for us to London, to go birding with Ben, and take a tour of the AFAR research facility!
The trip takes place on Father's Day! Sunday June 21, in the morning and early afternoon. Likely we will have a walk from 9-12, followed by the tour from 12-1.
Perhaps folks would like to go for lunch after the tour?
I will get it up on the website as an official trip you can register for, but I wont have the opportunity until after June 1. This is advance notice, so you can mark your calendars...
Free parking will be available in a lot near to AFAR.
Here is the official description:
The Advanced Facility for Avian Research (AFAR) is dedicated to the study of avian biology with specialized housing and experimental facilities to understand bird behaviour, physiology and neurobiology. The unique AFAR hypobaric climatic wind tunnel is used to study bird flight and migration under controlled atmospheric conditions. AFAR tours will be led by AFAR Director Dr. Scott MacDougall-Shackleton and Dr. Chris Guglielmo, Director of Western’s Centre for Animals on the Move. AFAR researcher Dr. Ben Sonnenberg will lead a birding walk on trails adjacent to the AFAR.
