COMPLETISM

It's a bike ride.
Saturday, March 1, 2025
Departing California Donuts #21 at 9pm

We are so close now! Sean may be a proper Completist, but I (Nathan) still have a few rides to go. And they're some good ones! Sometime later in March, we will have a (weekend daytime) redo of Passage #437, which was itself a redo of Passage #169 - Square Town/Town Square, one of those routes that people talk about when trying to explain just what it is that we do (or, uh, did). Then in April, we will finally get around to #400 - Over the Hill, a two-day endeavor where we camp and make some pizza in the middle.

This week though, we have one more nighttime ride, a fun little jaunt with some mild educational content. It's a later Passage that seems a bit like an early Passage with its shorter distance and lighthearted conceptual construction. I suppose the fact that it still manages to hit plenty of interesting bits is a good reminder that there will always be more ways to see the city. It's Passage #499 - The Frond Files:

If you were riding a bike around the city late yesterday afternoon or early evening, you no doubt experienced that particular L.A. cycling game: dodge the falling palm fronds. While perhaps appearing delicate and light on a typical day, swaying gently against the sky, when the wind really gets going those things come hailing down violently. Watch out!

Ever being ones to tempt fate (since it appears that we might get significant wind again tonight), we thought this week we could visit some of the iconic stands about town. Palm trees are, as you may have heard, slowly disappearing from Los Angeles, either simply reaching the end of their typical lifespans or falling prey to weevils or disease. Let’s enjoy them while we can.

(~23 miles; one medium-sized hill)
