The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #197:

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

***Please note the important announcements at the end of this email***

Danger from above! Danger from below! Danger from the sea! Danger from the land! Danger everywhere! Indeed, to read some accounts, one would think that Los Angeles is a city in constant peril. And in many ways, it is. Whether the perceived peril actually aligns with the real peril is of course a different question entirely, but somewhere between worrying about everything and worrying about nothing, there is a combination of worries that gauges the risks perfectly. Sadly, this perfect combination does not involve very many sharks or explosions, so it does not quite garner as much attention as one might hope.

So, that said, what are you doing to prepare for tsunamis/fires/landslides/sharks/nuclear fallout/terrorist attacks/disease outbreaks/The Big One? We can tell you what we're doing. We're going out to see what everybody else is doing, because riding bikes is a lot more fun than crafting the perfect bundle of worries.

See what we mean? The flashy stuff gets all the attention.

35 miles this week; mostly flat, with a few rolling hills, some sirens, some seismographs and healthy dose of twinkling industrial lights.

***Announcement the First***

To celebrate our upcoming 200th ride as well as the fourth anniversary of the Passage, we will be doing something special. That is, instead of our usual Wednesday night rides, we will be doing four Saturday daytime rides in cities around the outskirts of Los Angeles. Starting with Passage #200 on May 25th and continuing through the next three rides (on June 1st, 8th and 15th), we will be taking the Metrolink to adjacent Counties, Valleys and Empires for Passage-y explorations. A $10 weekend pass will get you (and your bike) there, back and then some. If you have been wanting to do more Passage rides but simply can't make it out on a weeknight, this may be just the chance you've been waiting for!

Again: there will be no Wednesday night Passage rides on May 22nd and 29th nor on June 5th and 12th. There will instead be daytime Passage rides on the following Saturdays (the 25th, 1st, 8th and 15th, respectively). You may un-mark and re-mark your calendars accordingly.

We will return to our regular Wednesday night schedule on June 19th, when we will celebrate our four year anniversary!

***Announcement the Second***

Passage regular Alex Schondorf is doing the AIDS/Lifecycle ride this year to raise funds for the fight against AIDS. With just a month to go, he is getting close to his fundraising goal, but that last bit is always the hardest to raise. We know what a challenge this can be. We also know that Alex is a great guy and worthy of your support. Check out his ALC donation page, here:
