I've recently noticed an Egypt connection/theme lately here in LOST.

A few things:
1. In this last episode we see the full statue (which we assume to be
the 4-toed statue in full), which seems to be holding an Ankh in at
least one of it's hands (which represents eternal life)....which is
the same symbol that is on Paul's necklace....which is interesting
considering the fact that people who have dies have a way of coming
back to life on the island or appearing to others on the island.
2. The Dharma leader at the time in 1974 is Horace....sounds like
"Horus" the Egyptian god.
3. Richard Alpert, who is the Others leader in 1974 has the initials
R.A......similar to "Ra," another Egyptian god.
4. Richard Alpert is always wearing eyeliner.....very Egyptian-like
visually
5. Hurley is painting the Sphynx when Locke/Benthem comes to visit him
in the mental institution.
6. The exit from the island is in Tunisia, which is fairly close to
Egypt.
7. There are a lot of hieroglyphs that we've seen around....some on
the "temple" area and also we see them on the countdown timer in the
Swan station after it's gone past 108 minutes which I've read that at
Comic Con 2006, producer Damon Lindelof translated the countdown timer
sequence to mean "underworld." We also see hieroglyphs on Ben's secret
door, the frozen wheel chamber, on the Ajira Airways boarding pass.

Did ancient Egypt have an influence on the island? Or did the ancient
culture of the island have an influence on Egypt? Or perhaps at some
point in time and space the island was closer to Egypt (if that's
possible?)?

It will be interesting to see how this all ties in!

It's a great thought, and something I've been discussing with a friend of mine off-line.  From Wikipedia...

Osiris, by different accounts, was either the son of Re-Atum or Geb, and king of Egypt. His brother Seth represented chaos in the universe. He murdered Osiris by tricking him to fit inside of a box, which was the nailed shut and thrown into the Nile. After killing Osiris, Seth tore his body into pieces. Isis rescued most of the pieces for burial beneath the temple, but first she resurrected Osiris so she could copulate with him to create their child Horus . Seth made himself king, but was challenged by Osiris's son - Horus. Seth lost and was sent to the desert. Osiris was mummified by Isis and became god of the dead. Horus became the king and from him descended the pharaohs.

It's not a one-to-one fit, but Locke as Osiris and Ben as Seth makes for another interesting parallel.

VERY interesting (although I think that's just how Nestor Carbonell's eyes look, or every role he's ever played calls for eyeliner). Is Richard of Egyptian descent?

Check this out (from the Wikipedia entry on Ra -- mentions both Horus and the underworld:

"Ra (pronounced Rah, and sometimes as Ré) is an ancient Egyptian sun god. By the fifth dynasty he became a major deity in ancient Egyptian religion, identified primarily with the mid-day sun, with other deities representing other positions of the sun. Ra changed greatly over time and in one form or another, much later he was said to represent the sun at all times of the day. The chief cult centre of Ra first was based in Heliopolis (ancient Inunu) meaning "City of the Sun." In later Egyptian dynastic times, Ra was merged with the god Horus, as Re-Horakhty (and many variant spellings). When his worship reached this position of importance in the Egyptian pantheon, he was believed to command the sky, the earth, and the underworld."

There's also some talk that the statue could be Anubis -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anubis -- although I thought the body seemed to be that of a woman.

Do we think Paul was assassinated for some reason? If there was a truce (Richard seems like the kind of guy who not go back on his word) why would the others kill innocent Dharma members?

So if Horace Horus, and "from him descended the Pharaohs," who is this son he just had?
