So, Widmore claims that the island wanted Rosseau/Alex dead, but Ben
spared them. But then in the end, Rosseau and Alex died, and the
island didn't stop it (the way that it stopped, say, Michael). So
does this conclude that the island did want them dead? And if so,
does that mean that Widmore is actually the one more in tune with the
island than Ben? And if that is so, does that mean that Widmore is
"good" and Ben is "evil?" Or, have we been thrown a big curveball,
and the island is inherently evil, and all the "good" characters rebel
against it?

and it seems as though Jacob is the physical mouth of the island. Jacob's desires come across as the islands desires as well (everyone follows Jacob after all). This all can't help but remind me of a little tale about a wizard who lived in an Emerald city.

It could be that the Island wanted Rousseau/Alex alive until a certain point, until they've done what they need to do, like Michael. And it could definitely be that the Island is evil, especially since it (apparently) ordered the killing of an infant. And then there's Charlotte saying "this place is death." Maybe the Island tempts people and offers miracles to lure them, but is evil for the very reason that it plays fate, maybe even plays God (bringing people back to life)?

Speaking of the man behind the curtain (which had been referenced in Season 2, when Ben shows up as Henry Gale) I'm sure someone already suggested this, but what if Richard is Jacob? If the Island speaks through Jacob, Jacob speaks through Richard, so maybe the Island is simply speaking through Richard, and "Jacob" is just to keep his cover, keep him safe?
