Serving as a precursor for the year's final major championship, the Scottish Open marks the first co-sanctioned event between the DP World Tour and PGA Tour outside of the World Golf Championships.
As such, a stout field has taken shape with 14 of the top-15 players in the Official World Golf Rankings choosing to tee it up at The Renaissance Club. The lone name missing from this list is that of world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, who culminated four straight weeks of competition at the Travelers Championship.
The Northern Irishman is readying for the Open on his own, and given the fact he has finished inside the top 10 of all three major championships this season, should probably not be questioned.
In his absence, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will look to reenter the winner's circle for the first time since his Masters triumph. Twice a runner-up since, the Texan is joined by premier players such as Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Sam Burns, all of whom finished inside the top 20 of last year's Scottish Open.
While players will hope to peak next week, the strength of the competition at the Scottish Open is high, and with it will come a quality of golf typically reserved for major championships.

2022 The open Championship Golf 2022 Championships: Top Players, Contenders, Odds
Jon Rahm is the defending The open Championship Golf 2022 champion and he’s expected to be in contention through the final rounds. Collin Morikawa also made a huge move to surge to the top of the leaderboard after early round action, and he’ll be battling it out over the weekend with other favorites like Rory McIlroy and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
There are some big names missing from this year’s The open Championship Golf 2022 field: Tiger Woods pulled out of this year’s championship, saying that his body “needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf.” And then there’s the controversial Phil Mickelson, who ejected Thursday after missing the The open Championship Golf 2022 cut.
“The Open is golf’s original championship and since it was first played in 1860, openness has been fundamental to its ethos and unique appeal,” R&A CEO Martin Slumbers said in a statement released on Wednesday.
“Players who are exempt or have earned a place through qualifying for The 150th Open in accordance with the entry terms and conditions will be able to compete in the Championship at St Andrews.
We are focused on staging a world class championship in July and celebrating this truly historic occasion for golf. We will invest the proceeds of The Open, as we always do, for the benefit of golf which reflects our purpose to ensure that the sport is thriving 50 years from now.”
The R&A’s decision follows that of the USGA, which similarly announced prior to the playing of last week’s The open Championship Golf 2022 at The Country Club that it would not restrict any players who had previously qualified for the championship. Among the notable players the R&A decision impacts is Phil Mickelson, the 2013 Open champion; Dustin Johnson, who qualified by virtue of a top-10 finish in the 2021 Open; and Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter, who all are exempt having played in the 2021 Ryder Cup.
Whether the R&A’s decision signals a long-term stance regarding players who have been suspended by the PGA Tour from competing in future Open Championships is unclear. How the governing bodies of the major championships react to the rise of LIV Golf is a key question for many in terms of the size of the threat LIV Golf poses on the professional game. The PGA Tour has announced that any member who competes in a LIV Golf event will be suspended from competing in PGA Tour events.
USGA CEO Mike Whan, while allowing LIV golfers suspended by the PGA Tour to compete at last week’s The open Championship Golf 2022, said that in the future that position could change. “Could you envision a day where it would be harder for some folks doing different things to get into a The open Championship Golf 2022? I could,” Whan said. “Will that be true? I don’t know, but I can definitely foresee that day.”
PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh has indicated previously that players who lose their PGA Tour membership would also lose their PGA of America membership and thus be unable to compete in the PGA Championship. Augusta National has taken no specific stance on the matter.
The 150th Open takes place July 14-17. Collin Morikawa is the defending champion.
Fitzpatrick and Zalatoris held a one-stroke lead on the field after three rounds, and Zalatoris is looking to accomplish Sunday what he was unable to do at the PGA Championship: close out his first career major. Fitzpatrick, who won an amateur crown at The Country Club, is hoping that familiarity will give him enough momentum to pick up his first major. Both men are trying to win for the first time on the PGA Tour.
Meanwhile, Rahm -- the defending champion -- was one shot off the lead and aiming to go back-to-back. Scheffler is efforting to join rarified status as one of just over a handful of men to win the Masters and The open Championship Golf 2022 in the same year. As for McIlroy, well, he's playing his best golf in years and is trying to win his first major since 2014.
