Peeps,
As has been the case of late, the heart of the issue is Saraya's Bluepicks. A few tidbits and Picks from me to start.
Get out, have fun. Hope all are well.
Ross
1) Go to
http://kyblueline.blogspot.com for a chance to win tickets to the Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Bachelorette show Saturday at the Red Mile Round Barn. Seriously, click the link now, submit a vote for Lexington's best 'stache, and cross your fingers. I believe the winner is to be announced sometime today (Thursday).
2) If you missed the opening of Ed Franklin and Ashley Watson's exhibit at the Kentucky Theatre last Friday, make sure you get down there to see it before the end of the month. Ed's reverse-braille pieces are amazing and I'm totally crushed out on Ashley's paintings. Go go go. It'll make you happy. (And, remember, Ed's placing a doll a day somewhere in downtown Lexington. Check the Fbook page -
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=106961984438 - each morning for clues, and you could end up owning a beautiful, bite size piece of art free of charge. Check the previous pics - I love the owl.)
3) Kentucky Proud Art Fair at the Good Foods Co-op (455 Southland Dr) - Saturday, June 20th, 10am-2pm. Full info in the next issue, but I wanted to give a quick heads-up so you could plan on it. Sounds like a lot of fun - music by Big Fresh and others, local art, and children's activities including face painting and hands-on projects facilitated by the Living Arts & Science Center and the Art Museum at UoK. Free free free.
>> THE PICKS
Friday - Go see Dead Science and Bobby Conn at Al's (9pm, all ages, $5). I strongly recommend Dead Science's tense, theatrical pop to fans of Shudder to Think (Does anyone remember them? Sample Dead Science at
http://hypem.com/search/dead%20science/1/), and Bobby Conn to lovers glam rock executed on a small scale.
Saturday - The afforementioned Bonnie 'Prince' Billy gig at the Round Barn is option one (doors 8pm/show 9pm, all ages, $10 advance/$12 door). You can find the full details on
www.thelexingtonproject.org. However, if you're not feeling BPB, you've got another great option - Matt Duncan with Mother Father and Art Tongues (the fellas formerly known as In Endeavors) at Al's (9pm, all ages, $5). Matt gets my vote for the catchiest songwriter in town (Trevor Tremaine close second ... eff ... then there's John Ferguson ... and eff ... Robert Schneider ... anyway, we've been blessed with great pop songwriters, but you get the idea). I hate missing Matt, but the BPB gig is a special occasion. If you hustle, you might be able to catch Bonnie (should be done by 11:30 or so) and then catch Matt. It's a sprint, but well worth it.
Monday - Ted Leo w/Titus Andronicus, and Pomegranates at Southgate House. My fave hidden in the middle of two more buzzy - Titus Andronicus' "The Airing of Grievances" was one of my favorite discoveries of last year. The rec was just re-released on XL Recordings. If you don't make the drive north to the show, make the drive to CD Central to pick up a copy. (You can sample a bunch of tracks via The Hype Machine music blog aggregator -
http://hypem.com/search/titus%20andronicus/1/ - it's one of my most used resources.)
Tuesday - I may get a special issue out in time to preview these two gigs, but just in case ... two great gigs to choose from - the YouAintNoPicasso and LexPro sponsored Nana Grizol w/Asstricks* and Little Noodles at Gumbo Ya Ya (9pm, all ages, $3). Yup, a party/show at the little cajun joint that could. Nana Grizol is part of the younger branch of the Elephant 6 collective. They stole my heart at the E6 Holiday Surprise show at the Red Mile Round Barn last October. Check 'em out at
http://myspace.com/nanagrizol or use ye' olde Hype Machine again -
http://hypem.com/search/nana%20grizol/1/. Asstricks* is a new project from Big Fresh'ers John Ferguson, Dave Farris, and Nick Coleman. Little Noodles is sweet, ukelele pop (double uke, at times!) from the head and heart of Eli 'Eloise' Riveire and her capable cohort Slick Nick Warner. Fun music, delicious cheap eats and cheaper beer. You should come have fun with me at Ya Ya, but, if you're a fan of the intricate prog-pop of Chicago's Maps & Atlases, you should know you can catch them Tuesday at Al's (9pm, all agese, $6, sounds =
http://hypem.com/search/maps%20%2526%20atlases/1/). And, hell, you should also know that X is playing at the Dame (sorry, I like 'em but I'm not interested enough to look up the time and dollar details right now). And ... you should ignore all the other and come party at Gumbo Ya Ya. :)

Tolls here. Tickets are $10 in advance ($12 at the door) and available at CD Central in Lexington (233-DISC) and Underground Sound in Louisville.
