to The Last Resort (to greenhouse warming)
The worst case scenario served up to people is the Venus catastrophe
where the massive release of methane locked up in the permafrost and
the methane clathrates (methane ice) in the oceans is all released
after rising ocean temperatures melt them. Proponents of that idea say
that mankind is digging up the cumulative carbon deposits stored by
millions of years of dying plants and animals (dinosaurs) that have
been fossilized as coal and oil; and that never before has such a huge
amount of carbon been released into the atmosphere. Wrong.

200 million years ago before all of that carbon was stored as coal and
oil buried in the earth it was in the air
during the warmest climate period known to science, when the poles
were ice free and vast rain forests covered a much bigger part of the
planet than now. The swamps that covered the globe were hot and steamy
but that is not a completely out of control global warming headed for
Venusian type conditions. I'm predicting that even if modern
civilization manged to survive a greenhouse world and continued
burning up all the fossil fuels that despite the climate disasters I
have discussed, that we will not have to face the prospect of surface
temperatures hot enough to melt lead on a totally uninhabitable
earth.
