Worst case scenarios predict that a runaway greenhouse effect might
cause massive release of methane hydrates form the bottom of the
oceans as atmospheric warming reaches the sea floor.
Unprecedented release of all ocean bottom methane- a potent green
house gas might lead to unstoppable greenhouse warming until all life
on earth is extinguished as the atmosphere rises to Venus like
temperatures. The surface of Venus is hotter than the melting point of
lead. Planetologist ascribe those conditions to a runaway greenhouse
effect caused by high levels of CO2 in the Venusian atmosphere.

More probable scenarios predict massive flooding of all coastal cities
around the world and hundreds of trillions of dollars of damage that
might cause the collapse of civilization as the end point of a runaway
greenhouse where the polar ice caps and the Greenland ice sheet are
all melted. New Orleans was flooded with 30 feet of water and more
than 2000 people died in that disaster. That city has not recovered
from that disaster and it has half the population it once had. Besides
coastal flooding that will destroy many of the worlds most important
cities, global warming might cause desertification as dust bowls like
those in the 1930's become much more common. That will cause
reduction of arable land resulting in famines and food shortages. As
nations fight over dwindling resources a world war or many regional
conflicts might break out all over the globe.

Radical solutions such as orbiting sunscreens to block out some of the
light or to selectively block infrared radiation and cooling the earth
have been proposed. This group is dedicated to discussions of the
greenhouse effect and ways to prevent the ultimate disaster.
