Greetings all.

I have my '66 I29 in the yard for the first time in quite a while. I
had planned to do a lot of work, and as always I'm discovering more
that needs to be done as I go. No surprises there!

One of the unfortunate discoveries is that the rudder gudgeon is in
bad shape -- unless you like your bronze to be pink. I'm not against
pink in its proper place, but in this case I'm not excited!

Has anyone out there found a source for replacement gudgeon? If not,
and you had it fabricated, did you go with bronze or stainless?

Also, I'm finding myself having to scrape off about 6 or 7 layers of
bottom paint. I don't mind this sort of thing -- gives me a chance to
work out aggressions. One of the workers in the yard was telling me
of a boat they had in a year ago with 15 coats of paint that had to
come off. How many layers do you figure are on your boat?

Thanks

John

About 4 years ago, I was surprised that my gudgeon which is not corroded bronze
appears to be of two(2) pierces with what appears to be a seam in the aft most
portion. I had our yard manager (an old salt) look at it with me - he said
"that's the way they make 'em sometimes...". And this proves he is right:

I asked on this list but received no replies - I guess no one else has
inspected theirs closely. It has been fine for 4 years since then - though I
think on next haul out I will replace it, and I will either have a one piece
stainless or use two staainless straps that interlock at the stern.

If you find one for sale or have one made - please post the design

Good Luck,
Don P

My apologies if this is a duplicate - though the 1st never seemed to land back
in my inbox:

Hey John.

My gudgeon's aren't looking so great either, so I'd be interested to know how
you project goes. I had 6-7 coats of bottom paint to scrape when I first got my
'66. I used a large single blade scraper and spent about a week making a BIG
mess. Then I gave  the undersides an epoxy barrier coat (6 layers). Then I
applied a hard bottom coat in black and use an ablative anti-fouling paint in
red, so when I pull the boat in the Fall I can tell where the greatest areas of
ware are.
