My apologies if this is a triplicate - the 1st two replies never seemed to land
back

in my inbox - so here is a fresh post:

About 4 years ago, I was surprised that my gudgeon which is not corroded bronze
appears to be of two(2) pierces with what appears to be a seam in the aft most
portion. I had our yard manager (an old salt) look at it with me - he said
"that's the way they make 'em sometimes...". And this proves he is right:
http://www.alberg30.org/maintenance/Steering/Gudgeons/

I asked on this list but received no replies - I guess no one else has
inspected theirs closely. It has been fine for 4 years since then - though I
think on next haul out I will replace it, and I will either have a one piece
stainless or use two staainless straps that interlock at the stern.

If you find one for sale or have one made - please post the design

Good Luck,
Don P

Looked at them - those are for dinghy rudders - mount on the rudder and fit into a transom mounted pintle as shown here:

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=24785&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=10102&subdeptNum=10286&classNum=10288

Some people call the peg end a pintail which is a duck, and I believe a godgeon is a place where the wicked are locked in a cell with a minor deity.

For the I29 -one needs about a  6 - 7 inch "blade"

And on further reading - maybe bronze is the best material - at least for the fasteners:

And I just found this:
http://www.woodenboatshop.com.au/default.asp?Page=323
they are aluminum bronze which is supposed to be more corrosion resistant and they can be predrilled
