Dear Incubakers,
The first bake sale after vacations is approaching!
The fundraiser will take place on Thursday, September 28th. It is organized by Marta and Sarah (in copy). All the money will be raised for research on a rare Noma disease!
Please fill in the Incubakers schedule / calendar if you want to contribute with cake, help or something!! Coffee capsules are very needed this time
Noma is a terrible disease that should not exist anymore. Determined by socioeconomic factors rather than biological ones, it affects mainly malnourished children.
It starts with a simple gingivitis that, when left untreated, evolves to a gangrene that destroys the skin and bones of the face in only 2 weeks or less. Despite being treatable with antibiotics, the lack of knowledge and the poor economic situation of the children that it affects leads to a 90% fatality rate. The few who survive are left with scars for life, condemned to stigma and isolation.
The devastation of the disease is not matched by academic research. Fewer than 250 scientific articles have been published since the 1800s, leading to large knowledge gaps still remaining such as incidence or the exact etiology.
Noma Echoes is a research project that aims to shed light on noma in Mozambique, where cases have been identified by local informants, but where the last case officially declared dates from 2009. We aim to publish a case series of noma survivors, that serves as a leep to further research in Mozambique. We will visit healthcare units in the Zambezia Province, looking for noma survivors, and assessing the knowledge and practices around noma of health practitioners.
Noma is also neglected by donors and foundations, that's why Noma Echoes is financed by small donations like this bake sale.

Best
regards,
Asya
