Born April 1st in 1836 in Philadelphia, PA, Aloysuis
F. Armstrong was born to a family of moderate wealth
and excellent breeding. As descendants of onr of the
great American icons they had a certain prestige and
responsibility to the family.


1859 - entered West Point Military Academy
1861 - graduated in the second class that year due to
the beginning of the Civil War. brevet 2nd LT as
there were not enough actual positions at the time.

Oct 28-29 1863 Wauhatchie Tennesee, seriving under Maj
Gen Joseph Hooker [US] helped fend of an attack by Gen
James Longstreet, [CSA]

Nov 23 - 25, 1863 battles around Chattanooga under
Hooker's command. Battle of Orchard Knob, Tenn.,
Battle Above the Clouds, Battle of Missionary Ridge,
Tenn. The siege of Chattanooga was lifted.

1863 Nov 29, The Battle of Fort Sanders,
Knoxville, Tenn., ended in Confederate withdrawal

1863 Dec 8, Gen Averell’s cavalry destroyed
railroads in the southwestern part of West Virginia.

1863 Jan 17, Travelling with Sherman's Army as it
began its March to the Sea then Lt. Armstrong was
captured by Confederate forces and sent to Libby
Prison.

1864 Feb 9, Lt. Armstrong joined with 108 other Union
soldiers to escape from the Confederate Prison. This
was the same day as George Custer's wedding.

1874 - met Phileas Fogg as he travelled through the US
West on his journey around the world. This excited a
desire in Armstrong to see Europe and the world.

Mar 10, 1876 Gen. Crook destroyed Cheyanne and
Ogalla-Sioux indian camps. This action outraged Col.
Armstrong such that he requested to be released from
the service. Due to his excellent record up to this
point he was not demoted but was released; he is not
due to receive his retirement for a number of years.

His family was dismayed by his sudden departure from
the Army, pointing out how well his cousin George
Custer was doing in the Indian Wars. Aloysuis's
