I love Castle Falkenstein. One of my favorites. Which begs certain
questions.

Are we going to be playing in the New Europa setting with Holmes and
Nemo and all? Will there be faeries and magic? Will we be using cards
or dice? If we're using cards do you want me to try to remember my
tarot magic harmonics system? It was somewhat popular back in the day
when the system was still being put out.

I'm thinking I might like to try for a wizard of some type.

We know nothing about the system having never even
looked at it. Is there anything like an online SRD
for the system?

A setting with a chance to meet Holmes, Nemo, Fogg,
Flashman, the Earps, Barnum, Manchu etc would be cool.

Faeries and magic would be fun, along with the
steampunk tech. It matters not what we use as a
mechanic, they all work to add variation to the
results.

Castle F's before the days of SRDs. It is by Michael Pondsmith, the
guy who created Cyberpunk 2020 and it is, to my knowledge, the only
RPG ever designed that is completely and totally one hundred percent
in character from beginning to end. Even the rules.

The idea is pretty basic on the surface. There's a multiverse. The
various universes are seperated by the faerie veil, a formless
dimension from which the fae come (and, as a result, they too are more
or less formless, though they become bound by local superstition over
time). In this world there's magic (the manipulation of the world's
magical energy), steam punk super-science (which some say is a result
of magical manipulation on a subconscious level), dragons (evolved
dinosaurs with strong magical talents) and every Victorian story
possible is alive there. Fu Manchu? Yep. He carved out his own little
empire with mechanical terrors. The boys from Wild, Wild West are
secret agents for the United States. Emperor Norton the First rules
the Great Bear Empire which decided it would rather be that than
California. Here's the fun part. Sure, Captain Nemo roams the world in
the Nautilus and Sherlock Holmes exposes great mysteries as a
consulting detective... but Jules Verne's the minister of science in
France (which is protected from other nations by giant cannons...
essentially ballistic missiles) and there's a good chance you might
overhear Sir Arthur Conan Doyle talking philosophy and the latest
developments of Babbage's miraculous engine with Doctor John Watson at
the local theater. On top of all this you have mad King Ludwig leading
a compact of the forces of good against the evil faeries and their
mortal pawns, the Prussians.

The system's also perfectly in character. See, they play Castle
Falkenstein in the Castle F universe. Someone from our world, a gamer,
ended up sucked there and he introduced the concept. Only he couldn't
use dice because pilot society doesn't use dice (he mentioned dice and
a lady promptly fainted). So, instead, he adapted a card system. A lot
of people don't like the card system but I love it because it keeps
everything seeming wonderfully Victorian.

Aaaaand I've talked too long. My guess is you can find a wikipedia
article on it and a cheap online copy at drivethrurpg.com.

We weren't going to be buying any new gaming things
with Katie going into her senior year. We are making
the least expensive choices when we can and it is
still gonna hurt this year.

Can we borrow someone's copy to look over for a few
days or a week, please? If not, then can we get
together some time before the first game to do
character creation?

It does sound like a lot of fun.

Thanks,

John

Lots of questions...
My stuff (If I still have it) is in a box somewhere getting ready to be unpacked. I will hopefully have that this weekend. I will see about lending or getting hold of additional copies at low or no cost as well.

As far as the world goes. I intend a slight variation of the Nova Europa Jay described, closer to a "two worlds" idea with portals in between. On our side of the world, steam powered technology, Holmes, Nemo etc.. , on the other, fairies and monsters, with the occasional cross over. Most fairytales and such would have their reality in this world. If you've ever read any of Neil Gaiman's novels, like that. Most people on our side of the fence will think of magic as a fiction, but there will be some crossover. I'd like every one to start basically on our side of the fence.

We will be using cards rather than dice.
If things go well, I would be fine with some rotating GMing as well.

Steve

p.s. I've had some inquiries about filling the seats of Cary and Kris, we'll see if they are interested in Castle Falkenstein.

My one copy's pretty ratty. I don't totally understand what you have
in mind, Steve, but I'm sure you're clarify it for us when you
solidify your ideas. If I understand it we'll be living in a wonderous
(technologically speaking) world full of interesting characters and
unique technology and there will be a faerie world that intersects
our's? So no magic for us. Okaydoke. I can come up with something
else. Maybe a mad scientist. :)

The power of steam will save us all!

The idea of "two worlds" is that there is a sort of parallel world in which all the magical folk live in. Sort of like the Harry Porter thing. I say sort of parallel, because they are the same world, but people from one do not interact on a daily basis with people of the other, and most people don't even know about it, except as myth and fantasy.
I'd like to start on the 'muggle' side of things, with dips into the fantasy side along the way.
That said the 'mundane world' is fantastic by our REAL World standards, steam-tech, submarines, airships, babbage analytic engines, etc.. So it won't be entirely realistic.

I am still working out the details. A wizard is a possibility, perhaps some kind of world straddler, I need to reexamine how this might work. (Wizard in the fairie realm, Stage Magician in the 'mundane world.'  or something like that.)

Hmmm. Or, perhaps, an occult investigator ala a Victorian Hellblazer? Steve, do you want me to post the character generation system? It isn't too complex. Wouldn't take long at all.

Also, setting? A US setting's very different from an European one.

have you seen the dresden files? a wizard in a human world. His father was a wizard but worked as a "magician"  it was a rule that no wizard talked to mortals about it, though Harry was a "practicing wizard" that delved into crime solving.

Seen the show. Read the books. Also read Zatanna and Zatara as well as Doctor Occult and Doctor Terrance Thirteen, characters who pionered the whole magic hiding in plain sight or characters investigating the paranormal idea.

Me = geek. Duh! :)

Yah, geek = good. :)

I was thinking that being a psychic type would let me
be clued in to the 'other side' without having to be
obvious magically powered.

I was thinking of some hypnosis ability, which would
be valid in the 'real world' but have different power
level in the 'other side'. Also, running a seance
would be acessing an aspect of the 'other side' by
contacting the dead.

Not sure if that would work but willing to give it a
try. :)

well, I think I might just concentrate on a gadgeteer type... you know,
the guy who designs/builds the weapons, vehicles, devices, traps, that
other people can use... course, I'd like to hear about what other
archtypes might be available for play in this genre... I'm not very
familiar with it.
