Hi!

first of all, please point me to the right forum
in case this question was inadequate here.

I saw David Attenborough in one of his early Documentations with a
cut-through tree trunk out of stone - it was a million years old fossile.

he first applied acetone as a primer and then he applied an acetate
laminate and he let it cure for a while.

then he was able to carefully peel off he transparent film and he
had a wonderful huge "dia-film" in his hands showing all the
cell structures of the million years old tree!

I searched and I asked a lot but no one can supply such cellulose
acetate laminate fluid or has even heard about something like this.

btw:
here in Europe the cellulose products have become really rare by now.

I would diy-mix this coating if somebody could tell me how to do it.

Or has anybody got a clue where I can order 1 kg of such coating ?

any help will be highly appreciated!

yous, Gerald Trost

Gerald,

There's a good article about the technique on Wikipedia under "Film pull."  We did this in a botany class a couple of years ago, as I recall it wasn't hard to do, and I think we used acetate film, but I don't remember what the solution was that we painted onto the fossil.  Anyway, the Wikipedia article has several references that will get you going in the right direction as to exactly what materials you'll need.  Good luck with it!!

Charlie
