I got the basic forensic science kit, and in a plastic bag with some kind of absorbent material, something had leaked as the outside of a bottle was damp and the sand-like stuff was sticking to it.  What would be the best way to proceed in this case? I am worried that washing the bottles will cause the labels to come off and render them useless.

Hi, Olivia

First, my apology for the inconvenience. Leaks don't happen often--we get a report of a leak about once in every 250 to 300 kits--but they are annoying when they do happen. Fortunately, most leaks have been pretty minor.

Can you tell which bottle has leaked? If so, I'd suggest (while wearing gloves) rinsing the bottle under running tap water. That shouldn't affect the label. You can also rinse any other bottles that may have been affected.

Let me know if you need a replacement bottle or bottles.

Best regards.

Bob
