Maoist Nepal Better Balance the Power for a Stable Government

If Maoist as a major political party in Constituent Assembly of Nepal is going to facilitate drafting of a new constitution of Federal Democratic Republic Nepal, then it should better balance the power in order to form a stable cabinet by electing the first president of Nepal not necessarily for sake of boosting national pride but accomplishing the fundamental objective of Constituent Assembly.

In my humble opinion there is not a single individual on the horizon of the contemporary Nepal, who has self-integrated personal profile to hold up such an inspirational political national image and pride.  If there is one, then electing such an individual should be able to balance the power in accomplishing the fundamental objective of Constituent Assembly.

Therefore, it all boils down to how to share political power that can accomplish the fundamental objective of Constituent Assembly with the goodwill of political consensus rather than deliberately inviting political deadlocks.  There will be ample of political crises in days to come during the period of drafting constitution. Therefore, if the political power is not balanced with such priority to give space for the goodwill to reach political consensus, drafting a new constitution cannot be accomplished within the time frame.

The political consequence of dishonoring a dedicated political celebrity despite his will to clinging to power, particularly over his own party,  will be unfortunate.  Maoist and UML joint venture without the active participation of Nepali Congress, not in opposition but in coalition government as partner communist led government will fail.  It is not a normal political behavior of both Maoist and UML to outright disregard GP. Koirala without the second thought from the option to elect him as the first president of Nepal in regard to balancing political power for the sake of nation.  The history will not forgive such an act of elimination of celebrity who had worked so hard to bring people's movement for democracy to a logical conclusion for establishing a federal democratic republic Nepal.

As UML has failed with its insensible politics during Constituent Assembly elections it is again heading to that direction, unless it seriously learns to observe protocols of politics.  That is to say that it is the ethical responsibility of UML to recommend GP Koirala for the position of the first president of Nepal to major political party Maoist at this point in history of the nation in its struggle to respect people's aspiration for democracy.  Any political party that does not have such a political sensibility beyond the greed of power to honor a political celebrity in goodwill of coalition is disgraceful.

In my opinion, with due respect that electing former general secretary of UML MK Nepal as the first president of Nepal will be considered fighting out octogenarian veteran of democracy GP Koirala off the sidewalk unnecessarily without any regards to people's aspiration.  It is a normal political process to arrive to a logical conclusion in the democratic history of Nepal to elect GP Koirala as the first president of federal democratic republic Nepal.  Despite the negative public opinion of Nepali Congress Party GP Koirala deserves such honor for his personal sacrifice to democracy.

If Maoist and UML failed normally to be sensible to set the protocol for political consensus in honor to octogenarian veteran of democracy GP Koirala by electing him the first president of the federal democratic republic Nepal then Nepali Congress must fight for the ballot of people's representatives in Constituent Assembly as per the guideline for electing president. It is then Nepali Congress's responsibility to put him in the ballot of the Constituent Assembly.

It is my humble suggestion to the representatives of Constituent Assembly despite their party-line commitment that history will justify if Constituent Assembly elect octogenarian veteran of democracy GP Koirala as the first president of the federal democratic republic Nepal.  In my opinion as an independent freelance columnist it is politically sensible and historically justifiable to elect GP Koirala as the first president of Nepal despite his and his party's negative public opinion not only in the nation but in the international community.

If Maoist's fear of electing GP Koirala as the first president of federal democratic republic Nepal is the anxiety of entire Nepali Congress Party intruding unnecessarily to the presidency with their feudal nepotistic party behavior, in democracy such worry does not count because democracy is the evolutionary process of transforming such socio-political and economic behaviors of entire society for the better.

On the contrary, if Maoist excludes Nepali Congress from the new coalition government it will have to confront skyrocketing oppositions that can be overload for Maoists leaderships to incorporate.  It is certain Nepali Congress will not participate in Maoist led government unless the octogenarian veteran of democracy GP Koirala is nominated with the consensus of Maoist and UML for electing him as the first president of federal democratic republic Nepal.  Once Maoist accepts the option all the pre-conditions that NC has tabled will pave the way for a new government formation.

Certainly, for Nepali Congress it cannot be more than a party pride to honor octogenarian veteran of democracy GP Koirala.  But for the nation it is the politics that can help balance the political power.  This perception should have been more relevant to UML leaderships than to Maoist.

It is for sure with such power-hunger political strategy UML might collapse in the long run.  It seems as if the outgoing former UML general secretary has not yet realized the reason for his electoral loss in the Constituent Assembly along with other outdated UML leaders who could not agree with Maoist electoral strategies.  It is again mistake to take unnecessary advantage of the situation in order to boost the lost leader of UML without the second thought for the political processes that can accomplish the fundamental objective of the nation.

In democracy but not otherwise the politics of political leaders which can put the national priority above all interests can radically transform society beyond their party power and ideology.  Such a move in politics, which this transition period is thirsty of, can make history.  If not Nepal will remain what it has been time and again for people to blame political parties and their leaderships out of their hopelessness!
