On Cholesterol Related Premature Death of South Asian Immigrants in America
Average south Asian immigrants who have come to America are middle class of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives and Sri Lanka whose whole infant life for generations have been nourished with the fatty water-buffalo-milk products. The water-buffalo-milk is high in LDL (low-density-lipid) cholesterol, which causes cardiovascular disease, and heavy in lactose or milk sugar that cause diabetes.
South Asians' pride has long been in consuming pure milk and curd without single drop of water added and in the flavor of Ghee. It is still believed that Ghee will make them livelong to reach salvation. The scientific facts have not yet drawn their attention even coming to America that premature sudden death, especially in the goodnight sleep after a grand dinner of pride either with the brain-stroke or the heart-attach chocks the life off for family to grief over it.
It is of course a great loss but not worst if one is dead with the brain-stroke or the heart attack if not paralyzed at his or her early age. The chance is greater to get survive with the paralysis if one gets severe brain-stroke or heart-attach in his or her early age before sixty. But between sixty and seventy even survived with the paralysis will die in short period. However, after seventy chances for survive is slim.
American food market has given South Asian immigrants ample of opportunity to have such grand dinner of pride – Basmati rice saturated, chicken thigh or lamb kebab soaked in Ghee and rice pudding in pure whole milk at least a week at the most affordable price. Affordable milk and chicken thigh have skyrocketed their appetite without a second thought for the health and fitness.
First of all, South Asian middle class immigrants have come to America with their genetic make-up of high LDL cholesterol and diabetes. Yet if they keep indulging milk, ghee and mutton dinners of pride as often as they can then the health and fitness scenario of South Asian immigrant community in America is in danger.
The each community of South Asian country must do something about it to make themselves aware of the danger. For example, cooking with oil that has monounsaturated and polyunsaturated such as Canola and olive are better than saturated oil such as Ghee, trans-fat and hydrogenated oil. But even one consumes such a high-saturated food he or she must do some physical exercise regularly such as joining a gym or martial art or marathon or summing pool.
Learning a basic discipline of martial art such as Karate helps a great deal to be sensitive about the body and movements. It can be the same outcome of doing Yoga in a regular basis but metabolizing a high-saturated diet will need more than just Yoga. Yoga is ideal for those who eat healthy low calorie and low unsaturated diet.
I humbly request New York Nepali community to make their members aware of their health and fitness by informing them to eat low saturated food as well as encouraging them to join martial art school such as Karate once a week with their family.
I personally go regularly to Astoria sport Gym and twice a week to Astoria Oyama Karate School - a traditional Japanese Karate School. This school not only teaches karate to professional but also to all family members together – parents and children with the Japanese Karate school tradition. It is not that expensive – as a new member one can begin with $49.99 first, which includes all Karate uniforms. Please visit the website of http://astoria.karatebaka.com.
Cholesterol is made up of HDL, LDL and Triglycerides. HDL is high-density lipid found in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as canola, olive, avocado and fish oil, and is the most essential lipid for the cardiovascular health and brain.
LDL cholesterol is low-density lipid found in most saturated fat such as in mutton, chicken-thigh, dairy products, and coconuts and is the cause of cardiovascular diseases such as hearth-attack and brain-stoke. LDL can be genetically build-in factors in persons who have high level such as in the average middle class population of South Asians.
Triglyceride is the major cause of brain-stroke can be managed with the eating discipline of unsaturated fat and exercise. The chance of increasing Triglyceride is greater if consumption of the saturated particularly trans and hydrogenated fat is high particularly after the age of 40 without any exercise regardless of high LDL genetic make-up or not. The increase of Triglyceride boosts LDL and vise versa.
I like to request online radios of New York Nepali community run such program to educate members of Nepali community regarding their health and fitness, particularly about the genetic make-up of our cholesterols, which should be controlled with the eating awareness and exercises such as joining gym and martial art schools.
I strongly recommend whether one has insurance or not every members of Nepali community must go for the blood test if one is older than forty years to find out about the level of one's cholesterols. If the cholesterol is high but not yet in risk level than one can control it taking supplements such as vitamin B Niacin and fish oil from off the counter of the pharmacy or one of the GNC vitamin stores. Taking such supplements regularly after the age of 50 will always help maintain good level of cholesterols. I wish you all good health.
