Key Requests
If you are considering having a key cut using the embossed key number on a lock, then you should consider the differences between that and a locksmith using the impression method to cut the key, without any known dimensions.
The locksmith inspects the lock first and cleans if necessary. He uses the impression method to tailor the key cuts to the condition of the lock. The lock is at hand, and he can test his cuttings as many times as necessary to end up with a working key. Finding that locksmith can be a challenge though.
When cutting a key based on a number only, we don’t have those same opportunities, unless the lock loose and mailed to the person cutting the key. The cuts are based on the known dimensions required for a new, same number, lock. Therefore, you must inspect your lock by looking into the rectangular hasp-opening at the top of the mechanism housing. The lock itself must be reasonably clean. Old gunk or debris inside can prevent the lock or key from working (see Examples below). There can’t be any damage to any component of the lock assembly. Also, the lever tumblers must be lying flat against the lock-bolt plate, which is against the inside of the lock’s backplate. I’ve also experienced locks that are simply worn out, which would require the impression method to fit a new key.
We would need a readable photo of the embossed key number you’re requesting. Some embossments are not easily readable, and some may have a faint or a missing digit. This is to ensure that the new key does at least match the key numbers on the lock. I’ve run into cases where this didn’t happen and then you don’t know where a problem lies, the key or usually the lock. I’d also like to know how many brass lever tumbler edges you see against the lock-bolt plate. Some locks use a 2-lever key to operate a 3-lever lock.
Should you experience a problem with things working, feel free to let me know so, together, we can try to solve the problem. I do not charge for my services, but some of you feel that you must pay something, that’s up to you. My Email and PayPal account is 2tool...@gmail.com
Have a good one……Ted
