Why Lufkin Boxes have joint separation on the front chest plate answered.

I was restoring a Lufkin box that had the front panel (the one with the lock on it) separated from the chest. After removing all the glue residue from the previous repair,  I discovered that the "floor" panel of the chest was 1/8" wider than it needed to be. Probably because it was made of solid wood and it  had "swelled a full 1/8". 
Good news is that after cutting it down, the front panel correctly fitted the chest.
Hopefully the floor panel has finished swelling.

Wow, that was a lot of expansion. You must have done a good repair job. Hopefully it’s totally dry now.

As i got into the repair I wound up taking out the floor panel to table saw it and put a new tongue on it. 
Only possible because the glue was so gone. Would not recommend trying to dissassemble a well glued chest.
