I have found that the National 56-E-2 lid locks came in both 2-lever and 3-lever versions. I own both locks, which are embossed with the same key number. After making a key for each one, it turns out the keys were identical. The 56-E-2 key will work a lock with either 2 or 3 levers.
Here’s how that happened – the bottom two levers are the same in both locks and the 3rd lever is actuated by the uncut bottom surface of the key.
This indicates that IF all 3-lever 56-E- locks have the same 3rd lever as 56-E-2 does, then the key will open its mating lock with either 2 or 3 levers.
This defeats the purpose of having the 3rd lever. Maybe it’s a sales gimmick.
If any of you have a 2-lever and a 3-lever with the same 56-E- key number, check it out and let us know if this worked for you…….Ted
