Hey all,
I posted some of those old Gradone church records up on a couple
Italian genealogy websites. I was hoping someone would be better at
deciphering such confusing script! Someone was nice enough to spend
some time on one of the documents and translate it completely. I
wanted to share it here with you for your enjoyment.

Act of Death
Raffaele Gradone
Date of Death: June 12, 1876

Act Number 11

In the year one thousand eight hundred seventy-six, of day twelve, of
June at the hour post-meridian seven and minute ten in the Town Hall,
before me Antonio d'Agostino, mayor and the official of vital records
of the town of Castelvetere and appeared Antonio deCoti, of age sixty,
farmer, resident of Castelvetere, and Antonio Bimonte, of age
sixty-eight, property owner, resident of Castelvetere,

who has informed that at the hour of post-meridian six and minute five,
of today in the house on Via Piazza at number forty-one died Raffaele
Gradone, of age sixty-four, property owner (land owner), resided in
Castelvetere, born in Castelfranci, son of the late Salvatore
(deceased), resided and lived in Castelfranci, and of Domenica Mariano
(deceased), resided and lived in the same town, widower of Maria
Bimonte.

To this action which witnesses have been present, Giovanni Mele, of age
forty-six, property owner, and of Andrea Mele, of age forty, property
owner, both residing in this Town. We therefore have formed the present
act, which has been introduced, written and signed.

I also discovered through a rough translation of the death
certification of Michelangelo Gradone (our Michael's uncle) that
Raffaele was a land surveyor. This is quite interesting as for the
most part as I looked through the pages of information most people in
Castelvetere sul Calore were farmers. I also found this document
interesting as it states that Raffaele's father and mother lived in
Castelfranci. I checked on a map and Castelfranci is only five miles
away, but it's moving me towards potential new information.

So, for what it's worth, here's a basic tree showing my findings:

1 Salvatore Gradone
.. +Domenica Mariano
........ 2 Raffaele Gradone 1809 - 1873
............ +Maria Bimonte
................... 3 Salvatore Benedetto Gradone 1848 -
....................... +Maria Grazia Nargi 1855 -

................................. +Michelangelo Nazzaro 1862 -
............................. 4 Elvira Gradone 1882 -
................................. +Frank Pontone
............................. 4 Arthur Benedetto Gradone 1889 -

....................... +Maria Luisa Ciampi
............................. 4 Raffaele Benedetto Gradone - 1878
........ 2 Maria Guiseppa Gradone 1795 - 1874

Again, I hope this is interesting to someone out there! It sure is to
me.

Hi.....
I want to thank you for all the work you're putting in on this project,
and especially for sharing it. It is indeed enjoyable reading and I've
learned more about the Gradones from you than from my parents. Stay well,
and my regards to all.

Brian,
This is simply amazing.  I'd never have guessed that this kind of information was available without months of full-time, let's-look-at-the-archives research.  It's time to put together some questions for Dick along the lines of "What was life like in Medford-on-the-Mighty-Mystic?", but you've certainly outlined the geneology for us.  So, Uncle Dick, was there in fact a spa owned by a fellow named Leo around the corner from your West St. house?

Dear Brian,
After reading your last posting, I had to add my thanks. You've
done remarkable work unearthing Gradone history, and I am just
thrilled. But let me introduce myself. I'm a sister of Mike (from
Cape Cod), middle of Mike and Betty's five kids. I only wish I had
some info to add. All I have are memories of Grammy (Josephine),
Auntie Mary and Auntie Ollie, and some memories from a Gradone reunion
we staged some years ago, when we met my Dad's cousins Arthur and
Sophie (and their children). If only we had been able to get more from
Grammy, though I do remember asking her about Italy, and she wouldn't
talk about that part of her life. Why, I don't know.
Thanks again, and I'll be delighted to hear of any new info you can
find.

Linda Gradone
